Heavy rainfall brings boon to lone croc farm

Although heavy rainfall in the preceding months has brought innumerable miseries for the overwhelming majority of the people, it has been a boon for the country's lone crocodile farm, with its inmates laying over 500 new eggs.

"Last year reproductive activities of the crocodiles were affected due to 50 percent less than usual rainfall, but this year the weather has favoured us and 14 of our crocodiles have laid eggs," said Mushtaq Ahmed, managing director and chief executive officer of Reptiles Farm Ltd (RFL).

The private reptile reproduction enterprise was launched in 2004 with the aim of farming saltwater crocodiles commercially for export.

Located in Hatiber village of Uthura union under Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh, the farm's 13.4 acre compound houses 68 crocodiles in 12 artificial ponds and two lagoons.

The large reptiles, ranging from 7 feet to 12 feet in lengths, were brought in from Malaysia on December 22, 2004, at a total cost of around Tk 1.25 crore. Of the 75 crocodiles imported initially, one died in its cage during the airplane journey, and six others also perished since.

Fourteen of the remaining crocodiles are males, while 54 are females. Each female can lay 30 to 40 eggs a year. The eggs will be hatched artificially, and the offspring will be sold on the international market when they become four years old.

"Over the past year, we have built special incubation facilities and other infrastructure for hatching the eggs and raising the baby crocodiles," said Mushtaq Ahmed.

RFL employed Geoff McClure, an Australian crocodile expert, to design the state of the art infrastructure for the company. He also helped the company to establish and follow Australian reptile farming protocols, which are among the most widely used and successful in the world.

After a slow start, it seems the company's activities are finally gathering momentum.

"We are expecting 30 to 40 percent yield of hatchlings from the 500 plus eggs we have gotten this year. Next year, we anticipate a substantially larger number of eggs, and a higher yield rate of about 60 to 70 percent," said Mesbahul Haque, chairman of the farm.

While the project is Ahmed's brainchild, it was Haque's investment that helped turn the dream into a reality. The two entrepreneurs were aided in their maiden venture with technical assistance from South Asian Enterprise Development Facility (SEDF) and with financial support from the equity and entrepreneur fund (EEF) unit of Bangladesh Bank.

RFL also received assistance from Southeast Bank Ltd.

"Bangladesh Bank holds 49 percent equity in the company, and their support has been invaluable, but we wish they were more active as partners," said Haque. "We also hope the government will formulate an exotic wildlife farming policy to facilitate exploration of this field, as the sector can make valuable contributions to our export basket," he added.

Currently the farm employs 12 full time staff, who have been trained locally and internationally. As part of its human resource development programme, RFL encourages all its employees to pursue higher studies in local universities.

The employees are bound to follow strict safety protocols, and have been instructed not to allow any visitor on the farm premises, for safety and commercial reasons.

The calm and isolation has proven to be beneficial not only for the crocodiles, but also for local birds, since they can nest there without any disturbance. Flocks of birds have adopted the area as their home.

RFL also planted over 5,000 trees of 40 different species of fruits, wood and medicinal plants, whose yields they plan to sell locally.

Meat, skin and bones from the crocodiles will be exported to countries around the world. Charcoal made from crocodile bones is indispensable to the global perfume industry, while crocodile meat is widely consumed in Australia, Japan, Singapore, China and the Americas.

Mesbahul Haque also informed The Daily Star that a kilogram of crocodile meat sells for eight dollars on international markets, while a single purse made of crocodile skin can sell for up to Tk 20,000.

"Cost of rearing a crocodile for four years is projected at 20,000 taka, and export of each one is expected to bring in 40,000 taka to 50,000 taka," he said.

The company expects to start commercial export in 2009.

An unconventional product was added to Bangladesh's export basket as the country's lone crocodile farm has finally been able to send 67 crocs to Germany through air yesterday, half a decade into its inception.

"A Thai Airways flight carrying the 67 frozen saltwater crocs of different age groups yesterday left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for Germany ", Mustaq Ahmed, Managing Director and CEO of Reptile Farm Ltd (RFL), told BSS.

"We are very much delighted with the maiden export of crocs from Bangladesh as our dreams were fulfilled at last," he said, adding Bangladesh is the first country in South Asia to export farm grown crocodiles.

Mushtaq said Germany's Heidelberg University is importing the crocodiles for research purposes. "The export of crocodiles from Bangladesh would fetch US Dollar one lakh, ushering in a hope of croc business in the country," he said.

Earlier on January 21, the Department of Forest (DoF) gave the permission for exporting the crocodiles, Mushtaq said thanking the media for their sincere cooperation to this end.

He along with Mesbahul Huq, a pharmacist, set up the croc farm on 15 acres of land at Hatiber village under Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh district.

After exporting 67 crocodiles to Germany, there are now about 700 crocs in the farm, Mushtaq said.

While the project is Mushtaq's brainchild, it was Haque's investment that helped turn the dream into a reality. The two entrepreneurs were aided in their maiden venture with technical assistance from South Asian Enterprise Development Facility (SEDF) and with financial support from the Equity and Entrepreneur fund (EEF) unit of Bangladesh Bank. The duo brought 75 reptiles ranging from 7 feet to 12 feet in lengths from Malaysia for commercial breeding of crocs at a cost of Taka 1.25 crore. Of them, eight died on the way to the farm established in October 2004. Mushtaq said they set up the farm with an aim to export over 5,000 pieces of crocodile skin annually and create a base for earning up to US$ 5 million by 2015.

Different countries, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain, have shown keen interest in importing croc skins from their farm, he said, expressing hope that their farm would be able to export 500 croc skins by next two or three years.

He said there is a huge demand for croc skins, meat and bones in Europe, America and other developed countries like Australia, Japan, Singapore and China, and charcoal made from crocodile bones is indispensable to the global perfume industry.

Mushtaq said their farm follows the Australian standard and fulfills the criteria of IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) and CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) in breeding crocs.

Crocodiles are being commercially farmed in 40 countries including China, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

Fashionable items made of crocodile hide also have great global demand. Well-off people pay high prices for those.

A good quality crocodile leather bag is sold for US$ 50,000 to US$ 55,000, and the clients are even willing to wait for two to three years for delivery. Crocodile teeth, and other by-products are used for making ornaments including necklace and showpieces, which also enjoy high international demand.

Crocodile eggs up for sales on Bangladesh local market

With the growing global market for crocodile products, the country’s lone crocodile farm is now offering such products in the local market on a limited scale alongside its exports abroad.

The Reptiles Farm Ltd now offers crocodile eggs, teeth, and live crocodiles for the local market on a limited scale through online marketing.

The crocodile products were put in one of the online portals, celbazaar.com, on Saturday as the company put the offer, ‘The country’s only commercial crocodile farm registered with CITES is making available a small quantity of crocodile eggs. You can eat these eggs like any other eggs; you can make Moghlai Parata or even Pizza if you want.’ The farm also assured to provide recipes on request.

Most of the viewers of the online advertisement were curious about such products, especially the eggs, and many left lamenting comments for the high price.

The farm is offering crocodile eggs at Tk 1,200 a piece, crocodile tooth at Tk 50,000 a piece and baby crocodile at Tk 1,50,000.

The farm’s managing director, Mushtaque Ahmed, told New Age that he received an overwhelming response and most of them were curious about eggs as it was the cheapest item.

Many of them also inquired about crocodile teeth and few wanted to know how they would keep a crocodile as a pet, Mushtaque said.‘We actually do not market such products locally. On a test basis we had advertised to sell some unfertile-eggs as we felt there are many people curious about non-conventional items. I think most of the people are interested in keeping the eggs as souvenirs,’ he said.

‘Although crocodile eggs are edible but such an idea is still a cultural shock here. And I think few would be interested in eating an egg at Tk 1,200,’ he added.

The farm began its journey in 2004 with 75 crocodiles, ranging from 7 feet to 12 feet in length, imported from Malaysia for commercial breeding at a cost of Tk 1.25 crore.

It made its first shipment of crocodile export worth $100,000 on June 4, 2010 to Heidelberg University of Germany for research purpose.

Mushtaque said that they had set up the farm with the objective of exporting over 5,000 crocodile skins annually and creating the means for earning up to $5 million by 2015.

Various countries, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain, have shown interest in importing crocodile skins from the farm, he said, and expressed the hope that they would be able to export 500 crocodile skins annually within next two or three years.

Dhaka, June 5 (IANS) Bangladesh has a new item on its export list - crocodiles. The first consignment that has just left for Germany is worth $100,000, a media report said Saturday.
The maiden export was conducted Friday by the Reptile Farm Ltd., country’s lone crocodile farm, five years after it began farming the reptile.

The farm, located in the Hatiber village in northern Mymensingh district, now has 825 saltwater crocodiles.

Finding crocodiles should not be a problem in a country criss-crossed by rivers, said Mustaq Ahmed, managing director of the farm, adding that this consignment is of 67 frozen saltwater crocodiles.

Germany’s Heidelberg University is importing the reptiles, of sizes between 12 inches and 14 feet, for research, Ahmed said.

“If the shipment reaches in time, scope for export of crocodiles from the country will widen,” the New Age newspaper reported on its website quoting him as saying.

The country’s maiden move to export crocodiles was delayed several times due to bureaucratic tangles over issuance of permits to exporters.

He said the farm was ready to export crocodiles to Germany in December, but it could not be undertaken as the forest department did not give the green signal then.

The farm began commercial breeding of crocodiles by importing the reptiles from Malaysia.

Ahmed said they had set up the farm with the aim of exporting over 5,000 crocodile skins annually and earning up to $5 million by 2015.

France, Germany, Italy and Spain, have shown keen interest in importing crocodile skins from the farm, he said.

Bangladesh’s principal exports are readymade garments and manpower.

Mushtaq Ahmed, a university graduate, had browsed different professions, including one in UNHCR, but could not settle down anywhere.

He along with Mesbahul Huq, a pharmacist, then set up the crocodile farm, the Reptiles Farm Limited (RFL), at Hatiber village under Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh district on a land of 15 acres.

While the project is Mushtaq's brainchild, it was Huq's investment that helped turn the dream into a reality.

The two entrepreneurs were aided in their maiden venture with technical assistance from SouthAsian Enterprise Development Facility (SEDF) and with financial support from the equity and entrepreneur fund (EEF) unit of Bangladesh Bank.

The RFL also got assistance from Southeast Bank Limited.

The duo brought 75 reptiles ranging from seven to 12 feet from Malaysia for commercial breeding of crocodiles for Tk 12.5 million (1.25 crore). Of them, eight died on way to the farm established in October 2004.

Talking to the news agency at their Lalmatia head office in the city Friday, RFL Managing Director and CEO Mushtaq said, "We have set up the farm with an aim to export over 5,000 pieces of crocodile skin annually and create a base for earning up to US$ 5.0 million by 2015."

Different countries, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain, have shown keen interest in importing crocodiles from their farm, he said, adding the farm is likely to export skins, meat and bones of 140 saltwater crocodiles next year.

"We are very much hopeful of exporting skins, meat and bones of at least 140 crocodiles from Bangladesh by December, 2009", Mushtaq said and expressed the hope that the number would go up to 500 within the next two to three years.

He said there is a huge demand for crocodile skins, meat and bones in Europe, America and other developed countries like Australia, Japan, Singapore and China, and charcoal made from crocodile bones is indispensable for the global perfume industry.

To meet this demand, more crocodile farms could be set up in the country, Mushtaq said.

But, he said, there should be a policy on launching this unconventional business, otherwise its future could be disastrous like our shrimp industry.

"We hope the government will formulate an exotic wildlife farming policy to facilitate exploration of this field, as the sector can make valuable contribution to our export basket", he added.

Mushtaq said the international price of a kilogramme of crocodile meat is about US$ 200, while a baby crocodile is expected to fetch $700 to $1,200.

He said the number of crocodiles at their farm now stood at 447 from 68 through rearing in the last four years.

There are now 32 ponds at the farm with 447 saltwater crocodiles. Of them, 380 are small and 67 big in size and the length of the biggest crocodile is 14 feet and the smallest is eight feet, he added.

"In the last four years, we have built special incubation facilities and other infrastructure for hatching eggs and raising baby crocodiles", Mushtaq said.

Currently, he said, the farm employs 10 full-time staff, who have been trained locally and internationally. As part of its human resources development programme, the RFL encourages all its employees to pursue higher studies at local universities, he said.

Crocodile farming at the country's first ever reptile reproduction enterprise has witnessed its first success as two crocodiles laid eggs this season.

Reptiles Farm Ltd, a private entrepreneurship reptile reproduction farm, started farming crocodiles commercially at Hatiber village of Uthura union under Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh in 2004.

Currently, there are 68 crocodiles including 54 female crocodiles in the farm.

"We hope to get 2,500 to 3,000 eggs next year if the weather condition favours because moderate rainfall is needed to stimulate the crocodiles for reproduction," said Mushtaq Ahmed, managing director and chief executive officer of the farm.

Three entrepreneurs Mesbahul Haque, Mushtaq Ahmed and Dr Sheikh Muhammad Abdur Rashid jointly launched the farm investing Tk 5 crore with 49 per cent financial support as interest free loan from the Equity and Entrepreneur Fund (EEF) of the government.

Initially, they imported 75 saltwater crocodiles from Malaysia including 15 males on December 23, 2004 at a cost of Tk 1.25 crore.

One croc died on its way to Bangladesh and six more died later after reaching the farm leaving the total to 68 that included 14 males.

The crocodiles in the farm are between 10 to 24 years of age. Farm sources said there are 25 types of crocodiles in the world, the saltwater one being the largest of the species. Saltwater crocks can also be reared in freshwater.

The imported reptiles were released in 12 specially designed curved ponds and in two lagoons in the project area, which covers 13.4 acres of land.

Two crocodiles laid 69 eggs during wet season this year. The eggs resemble swan eggs and are being incubated in Dhaka, said Dr Sheikh Muhammad Abdur Rashid, a biologist and chief scientific officer of the farm. "It takes 80 to 90 days to hatch the eggs and we hope to get babies from the eggs this month."

"Moderate rainfall is needed to stimulate the crocodiles for reproduction and we hope to get 2,500 to 3,000 eggs next year, provided favourable weather conditions," said Mushtaq Ahmed, managing director and chief executive officer of the farm. "We would get more eggs this year, but reproductive activities of crocodiles were affected due to almost 50 per cent less than usual rainfall in this region."

There are commercial crocodile rearing farms in some 40 countries of the world including China, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia and Vietnam, said farm sources.

Crocodile meat is consumed widely in Australia, Japan, Singapore, China and the Americas. One kilogram of crocodile meat is sold between seven to eight dollars in international markets, added the sources.

Crocodile teeth, scrap hide and other by-products could be used for making fashionable commodities, garlands, ornaments or showpieces, which are in high demand in both local and international markets. Women's purse made of crocodile skin is sold at Tk 20,000 apiece in Australia, said Mesbahul Haque, chairman of the farm.

Charcoal made from crocodile bones is used in manufacturing perfumes throughout the world, sources said.

Cost for rearing a crocodile for four years till maturity is estimated at Tk 20,000 and it is expected to bring in Tk 40,000 to Tk 50,000 in revenues from export of each croc.

The crocodiles at the farm are fed with beef, fowl or other meat twice a week. On an average, each crocodile takes two kilograms of food at a time. The pond water has to be changed every month.

In the vast area of the farm, some 2,500 saplings of 30 different varieties -- fruits, wood and medicinal plants -- have been planted to create familiar greenery for the crocs, the sources added.

The farm also has plans to start rearing other types of reptiles such as tortoise, snake and monitor lizards (locally known as guisap) in the future. "If our first endeavour succeeds, we would go for other projects," said an official of the farm.

The authorities are also considering setting up a bird sanctuary and a butterfly museum in the future to offer recreational activities to the people.

The entrepreneurs thanked the locals and the officials of the local forest department for their all-out support to the farm.

Until recently, the project area was open to the public for several months when people would come from far away to get a glimpse of the crocs. However, the authorities restricted visitors from entering the project area as the movements of visitors disturb the breeding process of the reptiles.

The farm sources also said long-term investments of around Tk 2 crore more is needed for infrastructure development of the farm. Special types of temperature-controlled ponds for the croc babies would be needed soon. The investors would have to wait five to seven years to count profits from the project, said the investors.

An Australian crocodile-farming expert has been hired at the farm for a month to train the project staff on the latest technology of crocodile farming.

Dhaka, 30 May (Asiantribune.com): Bangladesh for the first time will export the skin, bones, teeth and meat of crocodile by an export company from this December.

"We expect to start the export of crocodile parts from next December," said Mushtaq Ahmed, the chief executive of the country's only company dealing with crocodiles - Reptiles Firm Ltd, recently.

"As many as 100 crocodiles will be exported in first batch," he said

"The hide of the crocodile will be the main export product. A crocodile with all its meat, bone, and teeth can be sold up to $ 1500."

The firm launched a crocodile farm on 15 acres of land at Uthura of Valuka in Mymensingh after bringing 75 salt water of crocodiles species from Malaysia in Dec 2004.

Mushtaq said that they would not have any problem in getting buyers as the skin of such crocodiles is in great demand in the world market for manufacturing luxury product.

He also expressed the desire to turn the reptile farm in to a tourist spot.

"We want to grow 15,000 crocodiles by 2015 with export of 5,000 crocodiles a year"

Mentioning the benefits of crocodile farm, he said, "The project requires a few workers . Apart from this, crocodiles are less vulnerable to disease."

Mushtaq said initial investment was Tk 5 crore which now stands nearly at Tk 8 crore.

The chairman of the company, Mesbahul Huq, a pharmacist, financed the project.

In the beginning, the Equity and Entrepreneur Fund unit of Bangladesh Bank approved around Tk 2.5 crore in loan to begin this project.

Four years after its inception, the country's first commercial reptile farm--The Reptiles Farm Ltd--in Mymensingh is now all set to make its first export of crocodiles.

The Bhaluka-based farm's Managing Director Mushtaq Ahmed told The Daily Star that they are at the final stage of signing deals with a few importers in France, Germany, Italy and Japan. They are expecting to export around 100 crocodiles aged over two years by November this year.

"Export of each crocodile will fetch us Tk 75,000 and we will get a reasonable profit from the first export," Mushtaq said hoping that his farm would earn up to Tk 35 crore from crocodile exports by 2015.

Mushtaq and another entrepreneur Mesbahul Hoque started working on crocodile farming in 2002 but now it has become a viable business, said Mushtaq.

The two entrepreneurs jointly launched the farm investing Tk 5 crore with 49 percent financial support from the Equity and Entrepreneur Fund (EEF) of the government in the form of interest-free loan.

Established at Hatibeer of Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh, The Reptiles Farm Ltd got approval from the Forest and Environment Ministry on May 5, 2004. First they imported 75 salt-water crocodiles from Malaysia on December 23, 2004 at a cost of Tk 1.25 crore. During the shipment, one crocodile had died while six more died after reaching the farm.

The number of crocodiles was 68, including 55 females. The crocodiles were between 15 to 28 years of age then.

During the last four years the farm expanded. The farm's crocodiles produced 140 hatchlings in 2007 and 240 last year. Some 400 hatchlings are expected from some 550 eggs laid this year.

"We are waiting for the grand day when our venture bears fruit and our hard labour and investment pays off," said the farm's Chairman Mesbahul Hoque.

Crocodiles are being cultivated commercially in 40 countries of the world including China, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Vietnam, farm sources said. They also said the flesh of crocodile is consumed widely in Australia, Japan, Singapore, China and America. One kilogram of crocodile meat is sold between $7-8 on the international market, the sources added.

Crocodile teeth, hide and other by-products are used for making garlands, ornaments of different kinds and small showpieces, which enjoy high demand in local and international market, said farm sources.

Charcoal made from crocodile bones is used for preparing perfume.

Officials of Reptiles Farm Ltd said the government is now formulating a Crocodile Farming Guidelines for new entrepreneurs interested in investing in this sector. Recently, a workshop was arranged by the Forest Department on this issue to accommodate views of stakeholders, farm sources said.

(Reuters Life!) - A Bangladeshi entrepreneur wants to add bite to the country's meager exports with skin and meat from crocodiles, products he says are largely recession-proof as they're targeted at the rich.

Mushtaq Ahmed's Reptiles Farm Ltd is the first to commercially farm saltwater crocodiles in largely impoverished Bangladesh, with the aim of supplying the luxury goods market.

It took Ahmed several years to get the necessary financing and bureaucratic approvals to set up the farm, which started operating in late 2005 with imported crocodiles and fulfils all international wildlife protection treaties.

"People first thought it was a crazy idea. But I always knew it was going be a successful project," Ahmed told Reuters.

"Four years on, it is now home to over 400 crocodiles, which is more than the combined total of wild saltwater crocodiles in Bangladesh," he said at the farm in the village of Bhaluka, 110 km (65 miles) north of the capital Dhaka.

Later this year, the farm will start exporting baby crocodiles and skin from the larger ones, with several European buyers already showing interest, Ahmed said.

The skin is used to make luxury leather products such as belts and handbags, and Ahmed aims to export over 5,000 crocodile parts annually, eyeing an income of about $5 million by 2015.

Crocodile teeth are used to make necklaces or decorative pieces, while bones are used in perfume production. Crocodile meat is also widely consumed in several parts of the world.

With all these commercial prospects Ahmed is confident his business will succeed, even in difficult times.

"This industry is not going to a affected by the global recession because those who use crocodile skin are targeting the really rich," he said.

Commercial crocodile farming exists in several countries, notably Australia, Thailand and Malaysia, but Ahmed says Bangladesh has a competitive advantage because of special import tariff agreements with the European Union.

Dhaka (AsiaNews) – For the first time in its history, Bangladesh is going to export crocodiles for commercial purposes. On 21 January, the Department of Forests authorised the country’s only crocodile farm, Reptile Farm Ltd, to sell reptiles to Germany. Exotic animals represent a large market in Europe, the United States and a number of Asian countries. The goal is to generate up to US $ 5 million in revenues by 2015.

Mushtaq Ahmed, managing director and CEO of Reptile Farm Ltd., said that on 31 August of last year, his company applied for a permit to export 67 frozen crocodiles to Germany and 10 live ones to Malaysia. After months of waiting, the Forest Department gave the green light.

He said an agreement was reached with Heidelberg University of Germany to ship 67 crocodiles, ranging from nine inches to five feet in length, which the university will use these in research. “We will export the crocodiles next month,” he said.

Reptile Farm Ltd. is situated in Hatiber village (Mymensingh district), and owns 825 saltwater crocodiles, including 67 specimens that are big size.

Ahmed noted that the regular export of crocodiles from Bangladesh would be an important source of foreign exchange earnings. The aim is to export over 5,000 pieces of crocodile skin annually and create a base for “earning up to US$ 5 million by 2015.”

There is a huge demand of crocodiles in European nations like France, Germany, Italy and Spain. Crocodile skins, meat and bones as well as charcoal made from croc bones used in the perfume industry are in great demand.

To meet this demand, more crocodile farms could be set up in Bangladesh, Ahmed said.

Four years after its inception, the country's first commercial reptile farm--The Reptiles Farm Ltd--in Mymensingh is now all set to make its first export of crocodiles.

The Bhaluka-based farm's Managing Director Mushtaq Ahmed told The Daily Star that they are at the final stage of signing deals with a few importers in France, Germany, Italy and Japan. They are expecting to export around 100 crocodiles aged over two years by November this year.

"Export of each crocodile will fetch us Tk 75,000 and we will get a reasonable profit from the first export," Mushtaq said hoping that his farm would earn up to Tk 35 crore from crocodile exports by 2015.

Mushtaq and another entrepreneur Mesbahul Hoque started working on crocodile farming in 2002 but now it has become a viable business, said Mushtaq.

The two entrepreneurs jointly launched the farm investing Tk 5 crore with 49 percent financial support from the Equity and Entrepreneur Fund (EEF) of the government in the form of interest-free loan.

Established at Hatibeer of Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh, The Reptiles Farm Ltd got approval from the Forest and Environment Ministry on May 5, 2004. First they imported 75 salt-water crocodiles from Malaysia on December 23, 2004 at a cost of Tk 1.25 crore. During the shipment, one crocodile had died while six more died after reaching the farm.

The number of crocodiles was 68, including 55 females. The crocodiles were between 15 to 28 years of age then.

During the last four years the farm expanded. The farm's crocodiles produced 140 hatchlings in 2007 and 240 last year. Some 400 hatchlings are expected from some 550 eggs laid this year.

"We are waiting for the grand day when our venture bears fruit and our hard labour and investment pays off," said the farm's Chairman Mesbahul Hoque.

Crocodiles are being cultivated commercially in 40 countries of the world including China, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Vietnam, farm sources said. They also said the flesh of crocodile is consumed widely in Australia, Japan, Singapore, China and America. One kilogram of crocodile meat is sold between $7-8 on the international market, the sources added.

Bangladesh is going to first-ever crocodile export next month as the country’s lone croc farm has finally obtained permission from the concerned authorities to this end, reports BSS.
‘We have finally got the permission from the Department of Forest on January 21 that paved the way for our croc export,’ Mushtaq Ahmed, Managing Director and CEO of Reptile Farm Ltd told the news agency Friday.
He added: ‘We have sought permission from the DoF to export 67 frozen crocodiles to Germany and import 10 live parent crocs from Malaysia on August 31, but after examining different aspects for about five months, the department at last gave permission.’
Mushtaq also said that their farm was ready to export crocodiles to Germany in December last, but it could not be possible as the DoF did not give green signal to them.
According to the agreement with the Heidelberg University of Germany, he said, their farm is going to export 67 frozen crocodiles ranging from nine inches to five feet in length to the university next month. ‘The university is importing the crocs for research purpose,’ Mushtaq said.
He said that the maiden export of crocodiles from Bangladesh would fetch $1,00,00, ushering in a hope of croc business in the country.
Mushtaq said the farm, situated at Hatiber village under Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh district, has now 825 saltwater crocodiles, of them, 67 are big size (average length 14 feet) and the rest are small to medium size ( 9 inches to five feet), he added.
After the end of the last year’s breeding season (July- September), he said, 411 baby crocodiles were born at their farm, which was 240 in 2008 and 140 in 2007.
He along with Mesbahul Huq, a pharmacist, set up the croc farm at Hatiber village on 15 acres of land.
While the project is Mushtaq’s brainchild, it was Huq’s investment that helped turn the dream into a reality.
The two entrepreneurs were aided in their maiden venture with technical assistance from South Asian Enterprise Development Facility and with financial support from the equity and entrepreneur fund unit of Bangladesh Bank. RFL also received assistance from Southeast Bank Ltd.
The duo brought 75 reptiles ranging from 7 feet to 12 feet in lengths from Malaysia for commercial breeding of crocs at a cost of Taka 1.25 crore. Of them, eight died on the way to the farm established in October 2004.

Reptiles Farm Limited (RFL), the first commercial producer of Crocodylus Porosus (saltwater crocodile) in Bangladesh even South Asia. According to media, Reptiles Farm Limited is the pioneer of crocodile farming in South Asia. The aim of the company is to produce commercially and display Bangladesh’s largest reptile in a sustainable manner, while protecting and promoting Bangladesh's wild crocodile population. “In June2010 the firm has exported 67 crocodiles of different sizes, small to large in Germany” said Md. Referencing Mushtaq Ahamed, managing director and CEO of the firm, Nasir said that the farm has an aim to export over 5,000 pieces of crocodile skin annually to earn US$ 5.0 million by 2015.
The firm was established at Hatiber village under Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh district on a land of 15 acres.
The crocodiles are fed up with meats of animals. While providing meat to crocodiles, food server calls a unique word and immediately crocodiles come up to have their food.
Reptiles Farm Limited does not take any crocodiles from the wild and fulfils the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) and CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) criteria for self contained breeding farms. Mesbahul Hoque, chairman and founder of Reptiles Farm Limited is a business graduate, who worked in multinational and national pharmaceutical companies at director and managing director level with top management experience of more than two decades.
Mushtaq Ahmed, managing director and chief executive officer of Reptiles Farm Limited is the architect of this business plan. After earning his degree in commerce and working as an assistant manager at a tea plantation, he received professional training in management from England. He has wide administrative experiences in different sectors including tourism, United Nations and IT companies in mid and top-level positions.

Tourists in Bangladesh will now find an addition to their menu as the country's lone crocodile farm has taken the initiative to sell the croc eggs commercially.

"Against the backdrop of demand for crocodile eggs in some hotels in the country, we have taken initiative to sell the croc eggs commercially," Mustaq Ahmed, managing director of Reptile Farm Ltd (RFL), told the news agency yesterday.

"We have already sold about 150 eggs to some hotels and its main consumers are foreigners."

Apart from selling croc eggs, Mushtaq said his farm has also taken steps to sell baby crocodiles to amusement parks in the country.

"Baby crocs were sold to Saudia Park Ltd, an amusement park in Bogra."

Earlier, the RFL exported 67 frozen saltwater crocs to Germany's Heidelberg University for research purposes.

"The export of crocodiles from Bangladesh fetched 1 lakh euros, ushering in a hope of croc business in the country," he said.

Different countries, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain, have shown keen interest in importing croc skins from their farm, he said. He hoped the farm would be able to export 500 croc skins by next two or three years.

He along with Mesbahul Huq, a pharmacist, set up the croc farm on 15 acres in Hatiber village in Bhaluka upazila, Mymensingh.

After exporting crocodiles to Germany, there are now about 700 crocs in the farm, said Mushtaq.

অবশেষে ময়মনসিংহের ভালুকার কুমির রপ্তানি শুরু হয়েছে। গত ৪ জুন বাংলাদেশ থেকে প্রথমবারের মতো খামারে উৎপাদিত কুমির বিদেশে রপ্তানি করা হয়। ময়মনসিংহের ভালুকায় অবস্থিত রেপটাইলস ফার্ম লিমিটেড দেশের এবং আন্তর্জাতিক আইন মেনে এই প্রথম ৬৭টি হিমায়িত কুমির জার্মানির হাইডেলবার্গ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে রপ্তানি করেছে। আগামী ডিসেম্বরে ছোট-বড় মিলিয়ে আরো প্রায় চার শ হিমায়িত কুমির বিদেশে রপ্তানি করা হবে বলে সংশ্লিষ্টরা জানিয়েছে। গত মার্চে ভালুকা থেকে কুমির রপ্তানির সব কিছু ঠিকঠাক থাকলেও প্রশাসনিক কিছু নিয়মের কারণে কুমির রপ্তানি প্রায় দুই মাস বিলম্বিত হয়।
রেপটাইলস ফার্ম লিমিটেড প্রকল্পের অবস্থান ময়মনসিংহ জেলার ভালুকা উপজেলা সদর থেকে প্রায় ১৭ কিলোমিটার দূরে শালবনের ভেতরে উথুরা ইউনিয়নের হাতিবেড় গ্রামে। কুমির প্রকল্পের যাত্রা শুরু হয় ২০০৪ সালে। ওই বছরের ২২ ডিসেম্বর মালয়েশিয়া থেকে প্রায় সোয়া কোটি টাকা ব্যয়ে ৭৫টি কুমির আনা হয়। এর মধ্যে পুরুষ কুমির ছিল ১৩টি। আনার পরদিনই এগুলো বিশেষভাবে তৈরি পুকুরে ছেড়ে দেওয়া হয়। শুরুতে প্রকল্পের সাফল্য নিয়ে স্বাভাবিকভাবেই সংশ্লিষ্ট সবার মধ্যে সংশয় ও দুশ্চিন্তা ছিল। প্রথম দুশ্চিন্তা ছিল ডিম পাড়া নিয়ে। পরের দুশ্চিন্তা ছিল ডিম ফোটা ও বাচ্চা বড় হওয়া নিয়ে। ২০০৬ সালের আগস্টে প্রথমে দুটি কুমির ডিম দেয়। প্রথম প্রজনন বছরে ডিম ও বাচ্চার সংখ্যা কম হলেও ক্রমান্বয়ে এ সংখ্যা বাড়তে থাকে। ২০০৭ সালেও এখানের কুমিরের সংখ্যা ছিল ২০৭টি। ৬৭টি রপ্তানির পর বর্তমানে এখানে ছোট-বড় সাড়ে ৭০০ কুমির আছে। প্রকল্পে দিন দিন কুমিরের সংখ্যা জ্যামিতিক হারে বাড়ছে। এবারের বর্ষা মৌসুমেও কুমির ডিম দেওয়া শুরু করেছে। গত ৩ জুন একটি কুমির ৫৪টি ডিম দিয়েছে। বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের আর্থিক সহায়তায় এবং সাউথইস্ট ব্যাংক লিমিটেডের ব্যাংকিং সহায়তায় এ প্রকল্পটি বাস্তবায়ন হচ্ছে। এ ছাড়া এবার কুমির রপ্তানিকালে হিমায়িত কুমির প্যাকিংসহ সংশ্লিষ্ট কাজে সহযোগিতা করেছে ঢাকার এনাম এন্টারপ্রাইজ। রেপটাইলস ফার্ম লিমিটেডের ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক মুশতাক আহম্মেদ বলেন, কুমির চাষ খুবই লাভজনক একটি প্রকল্প। কুমিরের কোনো কিছুই ফেল না নয়। এর চামড়া, মাংস, হাড়, দাঁত_সবই চড়া মূল্যে বিক্রি হয়। ফ্রান্স, জার্মানি, ইতালি, স্পেনসহ বিভিন্ন দেশ এখান থেকে কুমির নেওয়ার আগ্রহ দেখিয়েছে। তিনি বলেন, ভবিষ্যতে কুমির রপ্তানির সংখ্যা বাড়তেই থাকবে, যা দেশের অর্থনীতিতে বড় ধরনের ইতিবাচক ভূমিকা রাখবে।

হবিগঞ্জের ক্ষুদে বিজ্ঞানীরা আবিষ্কার করেছে বাতাসের সাহায্যে বিদ্যুত্ উত্পাদন, আধুনিক পদ্ধতিতে পাটের আঁশ পৃথকীকরণের যন্ত্র, ভূমিকম্পের পূর্বাভাস পাওয়ার পদ্ধতি, ভয়ঙ্কর প্রাণী কুমির চাষ করে বাণিজ্যিকভাবে প্রচুর বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা অর্জনের কলাকৌশলসহ নানা কিছু। সমপ্রতি হবিগঞ্জ সরকারি বৃন্দাবন কলেজে অনুষ্ঠিত ৩১তম জাতীয় বিজ্ঞান তথ্য ও যোগাযোগ প্রযুক্তি সপ্তাহ ২০১০-এ বিভিন্ন শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানের শিক্ষার্থীরা এসব আবিষ্কার করে।
আধুনিক পদ্ধতিতে পাটের আঁশ পৃথকীকরণের যন্ত্র : পাট বাংলাদেশের প্রধান অর্থকরী ফসল হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়ে আসছে। প্রতিবছর পাট চাষের আয় থেকে বাংলাদেশের অর্থনৈতিক ভিত শক্তিশালী হচ্ছে। আধুনিক পদ্ধতিতে পাটের আঁশ পৃথকীকরণের একটি যন্ত্র আবিষ্কার করেছে হবিগঞ্জ বৃন্দাবন সরকারি কলেজের বিজ্ঞান একাদশ শ্রেণীর ছাত্র ইমতিয়াজ শিপন। মাত্র ৫শ’ টাকা খরচ করে যেকোনো কৃষক সহজেই এ যন্ত্র তৈরি করতে পারবেন। যন্ত্রটির নাম দেয়া হয়েছে ‘আধুনিক উপায়ে পাটের আঁশ পৃথকীকরণ যন্ত্র’। এ যন্ত্র তৈরি করতে হলে প্রথমে ১টি কাঠের লম্বা টুকরা তৈরি করতে হবে। এরপর কাঠের দুই প্রান্তে ৪টি চাকা লাগাতে হবে। তার ওপরে ২টি রডের নল ও ২টি বক্স দিয়ে সহজেই তৈরি করা যায় এ আধুনিক যন্ত্রটি। এ যন্ত্রটি ব্যবহার করলে অতি সহজে ও স্বল্প সময়েই একজন কৃষক পাটের আঁশ পৃথক করতে পারবেন। পাশাপাশি কৃষকের সময় ও খরচ হ্রাস পাবে। বর্তমানে এক একর পাটের আঁশ তুলতে একজন কৃষকের ১৫ থেকে ২০ দিন সময় লাগে কিন্তু এ যন্ত্রটি ব্যবহার করলে একজন কৃষক এক সপ্তাহের মধ্যে এক একর জায়গার পাটের আঁশ তুলতে পারবেন। এছাড়া পাটের একটি কাঠি থেকে আঁশজাতকরণ করতে সময় লাগে ৫ মিনিট, কিন্তু এ যন্ত্রের সাহায্যে কৃষকরা মাত্র কয়েক সেকেন্ডের মধ্যেই কাঠি থেকে পাটের আঁশ তুলতে পারবেন।
পাট পৃথকীকরণ যন্ত্রের উদ্ভাবক ইমতিয়াজ শিপন জানান, বর্তমানে কৃষকরা আধুনিক পদ্ধতিতে চাষাবাদ করছেন। পাটজাতকরণের এ যন্ত্র ব্যবহার করলে খুব সহজে ও অল্প সময়ে তারা পাটজাতকরণ করতে পারবেন এবং অধিক মুনাফা অর্জন করতে পারবেন।
ভূমিকম্পের পূর্বাভাস পাওয়ার পদ্ধতি : হবিগঞ্জ বিকেজিসি সরকারি বালিকা উচ্চ বিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্রীরা আবিষ্কার করেছে ভূমিকম্পের পূর্বাভাস পাওয়ার পদ্ধতি। তাদের মতে, ভূমিকম্পের পূর্বাভাস পাওয়ার পদ্ধতি সবার জানা থাকা প্রয়োজন। ভূমিকম্প সাধারণত মধ্যস্তর থেকে আসে। ভূমিকম্প থেকে রক্ষা পাওয়ার জন্য একটি পিতলের তৈরি ঘণ্টা বাড়িতে বেঁধে দিতে হবে। ৬০ কিলোমিটার গভীরে একটি নল স্থাপন করতে হবে। সেই নলে একটি পাইপ বসাতে হবে। পাইপের মাথায় একটি ঘণ্টা বেঁধে দিতে হবে। এ ঘণ্টা দিলে ভূমিকম্প হওয়ার ৫ মিনিট আগে ঘণ্টাটি বেজে উঠবে এবং তখনই ঘরের লোকজন সতর্ক হবে এবং ঘরের এককোণে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকবে। বাড়িতে ঘণ্টা বেঁধে দেয়ার কারণ—ভূমিকম্পের ফলে মাটিতে কম্পন সৃষ্টি হয়। কম্পনের ফলে পাইপটা নড়বে। পাইপের মাথায় বেঁধে দেয়া ঘণ্টা বেজে ওঠবে এবং লোকজন বুঝতে পারবে ভূমিকম্প আসছে। ভূমিকম্পের পূর্বাভাস পাওয়া বাড়ি তৈরি করতে মোট টাকার প্রয়োজন ১ লাখ ৫০ হাজার। বিজ্ঞানমেলায় এ প্রকল্পটি প্রদর্শন করে বিকেজিসি সরকারি বালিকা উচ্চ বিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্রী শক্তি, পূজা, ইলু, সুসমি, সুমু, সৃষ্টি, আঁখি ও এলিমুর।
কুমির চাষ করে বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা অর্জনের কলাকৌশল : কুমির একটি ভয়ঙ্কর প্রাণী হলেও কুমির চাষ করে বাণিজ্যিকভাবে প্রচুর বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা অর্জন করা সম্ভব। এমনি একটি প্রকল্প তৈরি করেছে বৃন্দাবন সরকারি কলেজের প্রাণিবিজ্ঞান বিভাগের ৪র্থ বর্ষের ৬ শিক্ষার্থী। এরা হলেন রুহুল দাশ মিথুন, আবদুল হান্নান, হেলাল মিয়া, ফারহানা আক্তর, আছমা আক্তার ও আহমদ। তারা এ প্রকল্পের মাধ্যমে কুমির চাষের ব্যাপক সফলতার কথা তুলে ধরেছেন। বর্তমানে বিশ্বের উন্নত দেশগুলোতে কুমির চাষের ব্যাপক চাহিদা রয়েছে। একটি কুমির চাষ প্রকল্প তৈরি করতে হলে প্রথম ১৫ একর জায়গা সংগ্রহ করতে হবে। এর মধ্যে ১০ একর জায়গার ওপর একটি পুকুর। পাশে একটি হ্যাচারি ও একটি তথ্য কেন্দ্র স্থাপন করা হবে। সমগ্র এলাকার চতুর্দিকে বড় রাউন্ড থাকবে। প্রথমে কুমিরের বাচ্চা বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশ যেমন চীন, ফ্রান্স ও অস্ট্রেলিয়া থেকে সংগ্রহ করতে হবে। প্রতিটি বাচ্চার মূল্য ৭শ’ ডলার ধরা হয়। এক সঙ্গে প্রায় ৭০টি কুমির চাষ করা সম্ভব। কুমিরের বাচ্চা সংগ্রহ করে হ্যাচারিতে ৫ শতাংশ পটাসিয়াম ফরমোলেট দিয়ে গোসল করানোর পর জীবাণুমুক্ত করে ২৪ থেকে ৭২ ঘণ্টা তাদের পর্যবেক্ষণে রাখতে হয়। এরপর পুকুরে লবণ মিশিয়ে নোনাপানি তৈরি করে চাষাবাদের উপযুক্ত করতে হবে। মনে রাখতে হবে, নোনাপানি না হলে কুমির চাষ সম্ভব নয়। কুমির চাষের সময় ১২ থেকে ১৫ জন প্রশিক্ষণপ্রাপ্ত শ্রমিক সার্বক্ষণিক তাদের দেখাশোনা করতে হয় এবং খাবার সরবরাহ করতে হয়। শুরু হয় পূর্ণাঙ্গ চাষাবাদ। প্রতি বছরে একটি কুমির এক ফুট করে বৃদ্ধি পায়। ৩ বছর পর কুমির বাণিজ্যিকভাবে রফতানি করা সম্ভব। ৩ বছর পর একটি কুমির ৩০ থেকে ৩৫ কেজি ওজনের হয়। যার মূল্য প্রতি কেজি ২শ’ ডলার। একটি কুমিরের মূল্য দাঁড়ায় প্রায় ৭ হাজার ডলার। অর্থাত্ শুরুতে একটি কুমির আমদানি করতে হয় মাত্র ৭শ’ ডলার দিয়ে। চাষাবাদের পর সেটি বিদেশে রফতানি করা হয় ৭ হাজার ডলারে।
এছাড়া কুমির প্রকল্প দেখতে আসা দর্শনার্থীর জন্য টিকিটের ব্যবস্থা রয়েছে। একটি প্রকল্পে দেশের বিভিন্ন অঞ্চল থেকে হাজার হাজার দর্শনার্থী কুমির দেখতে ছুটে আসেন। দর্শনার্থীর টিকিটের অংশ থেকে লাখ লাখ টাকা আয় করা সম্ভব। দর্শনার্থীদের জন্য পুকুরের পাড়ে একটি তথ্য কেন্দ্র চালুর ব্যবস্থা থাকবে। সেখানে কুমির ও প্রকল্প সম্পর্কে যাবতীয় তথ্য একজন দর্শনার্থী সহজেই পেতে পারবেন। কুমির একটি মাংসাশী প্রাণী। কুমিরের প্রতিটি অঙ্গ-প্রত্যঙ্গ ও চামড়া বিভিন্ন কাজে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
কুমিরের দাঁত দিয়ে উন্নতমানের নেকলেস তৈরি করে বিভিন্ন দেশে রফতানি করা সম্ভব। চামড়া দিয়ে উন্নতমানের মানিব্যাগ, লেদারসহ বিভিন্ন পণ্য তৈরি করে অর্থনৈতিকভাবে স্বাবলম্বী হওয়া যায়। হবিগঞ্জ সরকারি বৃন্দাবন কলেজে কুমির চাষ প্রকল্পটি ছিল দর্শকদের মধ্যে আকর্ষণীয়। এ প্রকল্প উদ্ভাবনকারী শিক্ষার্থীরা জানান, কুমির প্রকল্প বেকারত্ব দূরীকরণে বলিষ্ঠ ভূমিকা পালন করবে। পাশাপাশি দেশের অর্থনীতিকে শক্তিশালী করবে। তারা সিলেট অঞ্চলের প্রবাসীদের কুমির চাষ প্রকল্প গ্রহণের জন্য আহ্বান জানান।
বাতাস থেকে বিদ্যুত্ উত্পাদন : তেল কিংবা পেট্রল ছাড়া বাতাস থেকে বিদ্যুত্ উত্পাদনের পদ্ধতি আবিষ্কার করেছে বার্ডস কেজি স্কুলের ছাত্র। বাতাসে পাখা ঘুরলে তা থেকে অন্য একটি জেনারেটরের সাহায্যে তৈরি হবে বিদ্যুত্। সেই বিদ্যুত্ দিয়ে চালানো যাবে ফ্যান ও জ্বালানো যাবে বাতি। ছোট আকারের একটি জেনারেটরের সাহায্যে নির্ধিদ্বায় তৈরি করা যাবে ২০০ থেকে ২৫০ ওয়াট বিদ্যুত্।
৪ ফেব্রয়ারি দুপুরে হবিগঞ্জ বৃন্দাবন সরকারি কলেজে ৩১তম জাতীয় বিজ্ঞান এবং তথ্য ও যোগাযোগ প্রযুক্তি সপ্তাহের উদ্বোধন করেন সমাজকল্যাণ মন্ত্রী এনামূল হক মোস্তফা শহীদ। তিন দিনব্যাপী মেলায় ২০টি শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানের ১শ’টি প্রদর্শনী অংশ নেয়। মেলায় উদ্ভিদ বিজ্ঞান বিভাগের শিক্ষক সুভাষ চন্দ্র দেবের ধানের ছত্রাকজনিত রোগ এবং সমন্বিত বালাই ব্যবস্থাপনা, জেকে এন্ড এইচকে হাইস্কুলের গিনহাউস অ্যাফেক্ট প্রদর্শনীগুলো যুগোপযোগী ও আকর্ষণীয় হিসেবে দর্শনার্থীদের আকৃষ্ট করে।

ভালুকার খামার থেকে ১০০ কোটি টাকার কুমির যাচ্ছে জার্মানিতে

বাংলাদেশ থেকে কুমির রফতানি শুরু হচ্ছে। জানুয়ারির প্রথম সপ্তাহে জার্মানির কাছে প্রায় ১০০ কোটি টাকার কুমির রফতানি করবে দেশের একমাত্র বাণিজ্যিক কুমির চাষ প্রকল্প রেপটাইলস ফার্ম লিমিটেড। প্রথম ধাপে ৭০ থেকে ১০০টির মতো কুমির রফতানি হবে। এর মধ্য দিয়ে বাংলাদেশ কুমির রফতানিকারক দেশের তালিকায় প্রথমবারের মতো নাম লেখাবে। ১০ ডিসেম্বর এ-সংক্রান্ত একটি প্রস্তাব অনুমোদন দিয়েছে সরকার। সার্ক দেশগুলোর মধ্যে একমাত্র বাণিজ্যিক কুমির চাষের এ খামারটি ময়মনসিংহের ভালুকায় অবস্থিত।
এশিয়ার মধ্যে বাণিজ্যিকভাবে কুমির চাষ বাংলাদেশেই প্রথম শুরু হয়। উদ্যোক্তারা আশা করছেন, আগামী পাঁচ বছরের মধ্যে এটি হবে বিশ্বে কুমিরের সবচেয়ে বড় খামার। বর্তমানে কুমির চাষের সর্ববৃহৎ খামারটি রয়েছে অস্ট্রেলিয়ায়। কর্তৃপক্ষ আশা করছে, ২০১৪ সাল নাগাদ প্রতি বছর চার হাজার কুমির রফতানি করে তিন থেকে চার মিলিয়ন ডলার বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা আয় করা সম্ভব হবে। এরই মধ্যে ইউরোপের বেশ কয়েকটি দেশ বাংলাদেশ থেকে কুমির আমদানির প্রস্তাব দিয়েছে। বিশ্বে পাঁচশ' থেকে ছয়শ' মিলিয়ন ডলারের কুমিরের মাংসের বাজার রয়েছে। গত বছর বিশ্ববাজারে প্রায় ৪০ হাজার কুমিরের চামড়া কেনাবেচা হয়েছে। চীন, তাইওয়ান, জাপান, থাইল্যান্ডসহ বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশে কুমিরের মাংসের ব্যাপক চাহিদা রয়েছে। বর্তমানে অস্ট্রেলিয়া, থাইল্যান্ড, ভিয়েতনাম, সিঙ্গাপুর, পাপুয়া নিউগিনি,
ইন্দোনেশিয়া, চীনসহ প্রায় অর্ধশত দেশে বাণিজ্যিকভাবে কুমিরের চাষ হচ্ছে।
ময়মনসিংহ জেলার ভালুকা উপজেলার হাতিবেড় গ্রামে বেসরকারি প্রতিষ্ঠান রেপটাইলস ফার্ম লিমিটেড ২০০৪ সালে এ খামার প্রতিষ্ঠা করে। এ খামারে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের বিনিয়োগ রয়েছে। শুরুতে কুমিরের সংখ্যা ছিল ৭৫টি। পরে এসব কুমিরের ডিম থেকে কৃত্রিম উপায়ে বাচ্চা ফোটানো হয়। বর্তমানে এ খামারে ছোট-বড় মিলিয়ে কুমির আছে ৮শ'টির বেশি। আগামী বছর আরও একশ'টি স্ত্রী কুমির আমদানি করবে খামার কর্তৃপক্ষ। এ খামারে মূলত লোনা পানির কুমিরই চাষ করা হয়। বিশ্বে লোনা পানির কুমিরের চাহিদা সবচেয়ে বেশি। বর্তমানে থাইল্যান্ড বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশে লোনা পানির কুমিরের চামড়া, মাংস ও হাড়ের জোগান দিচ্ছে। বিশ্বে সাত প্রজাতির কুমিরের চাষ করা হয়। এর মধ্যে লোনা পানির কুমিরই হচ্ছে সেরা।
বাংলাদেশ পরিবেশ ও বন মন্ত্রণালয় ২০০৪ সালের ৫ মে এ খামার প্রতিষ্ঠার অনুমোদন দেয়। উদ্যোক্তারা পরে আন্তর্জাতিক সংস্থা 'সিআইটিইএস'-এর অনুমোদন নিয়ে মালয়েশিয়ার সারওয়াত থেকে সোয়া কোটি টাকা ব্যয়ে ৭৫টি কুমির আমদানি করে। ২০০৪ সালের ২২ ডিসেম্বর কুমিরগুলো খামারে ছাড়া হয়। তখন আমদানি করা কুমিরগুলোর বয়স ছিল গড়ে ১০ থেকে ১৪ বছর। কুমিরগুলো ৭ ফুট থেকে সর্বোচ্চ ১২ ফুট লম্বা ছিল। বিশেষজ্ঞরা জানান, কুমিরের গড় আয়ু ১০০ বছর পর্যন্ত হয়ে থাকে। আমদানি করা কুমিরের মধ্যে ১৫টি ছিল পুরুষ। খামারের কুমিরকে খাবার হিসেবে মাছ ও মাংস দেওয়া হয়।
রেপটাইলস ফার্ম লিমিটেডের ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক মুশতাক আহম্মেদ জানান, গত জুলাই মাসে জার্মানির সঙ্গে কুমির রফতানির চুক্তি হয়। তারপর ৩১ আগস্ট প্রধান বন সংরক্ষকের কাছে কুমির রফতানির অনুমতি চাওয়া হয়। কিন্তু সরকারের সিদ্ধান্তহীনতায় তা বিলম্বিত হয়। এতে করে কুমির উৎপাদন খরচ বেড়েছে। ভবিষ্যতে তিনি এ ধরনের ক্ষেত্রে দ্রুত সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়ার দাবি জানান। তিনি জানান, আগামী মাসে ইউরোপের কয়েকটি দেশে আরও দেড় থেকে দুইশ' কুমির রফতানির প্রস্তুতি নিচ্ছেন তারা।
রেপটাইলস ফার্ম সূত্রে জানা গেছে, ভালুকার হাতিবেড় গ্রামে প্রায় ১৩ একর জমির মধ্যে ৪ একর জমির মাটি কেটে বৈজ্ঞানিক পদ্ধতিতে ৩২টি পুকুর তৈরি করা হয়েছে। পুকুরগুলোর তলদেশ পাকা এবং তিন ফুট ইটের ওপর ৩ ফুট কাঁটাতারের বেষ্টনী রয়েছে। কুমির যাতে স্বাভাবিকভাবে নিখাদ প্রাকৃতিক পরিবেশে থেকে জীবনযাপন করতে পারে সেজন্য খামারে ৪০ প্রজাতির প্রায় ছয় হাজার ফলদ, বনজ ও ঔষধি গাছ রোপণ করা হয়েছে। লাগানো হয়েছে ছোট প্রজাতির কৃত্রিম ঘাস। এর মধ্য দিয়ে খামারটিতে গড়ে তোলা হয়েছে নিবিড় অনুকূল এক প্রাকৃতিক পরিবেশ।

রাজন ভট্টাচার্য হিংস্র প্রাণী হিসেবে পরিচিত কুমির। এই জলজ প্রাণী নিয়ে রয়েছে নানা কল্পকাহিনী। আছে বেদনাদায়ক বাসত্মবতা। কারণ জাহাজ ডুবিয়ে দেয়া থেকে শুরম্ন করে মানুষখেকো কুমির নিয়ে আছে বহু কল্পকথা যে কারণে কুমির নামটি অনেকের কাছেই আতঙ্ক। যদি এমন হয়, আপনার সামনেই প্রতিদিন ঘুরে বেড়াচ্ছে অসংখ্য কুমির। মেজাজ শানত্ম। কারও কোন ৰতির মধ্যে নেই। বরং কুমির চাষ করে অর্থনৈতিক আয়ের সম্ভাবনা। তাহলে কেমন হবে। আদপে পৃথিবীর নানা দেশে চাষ করা হচ্ছে কুমির। এই প্রাণীর মাংস ও হাড়ের চাহিদা কম-বেশি সব দেশেই আছে। কুমির চাষ করলে সরকারী-বেসরকারী সব সেক্টর থেকেই ঋণ পাওয়া সম্ভব। বিষয়টি অবিশ্বাস্য মনে হলেও বাসত্মবতা হচ্ছে বর্তমানে কুমির আতঙ্কের কোন নাম নয়। পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন দেশের মতো আমাদের দেশেও বাণিজ্যিকভাবে চাষ হচ্ছে কুমিরের। এখানেই শেষ নয়। কুমির রফতানিকারক দেশের তালিকায় আগামী মাসেই নাম লেখাতে যাচ্ছে বাংলাদেশ! ২০১৪ সাল নাগাদ প্রতিবছর চার হাজার কুমির রফতানি করার সম্ভাবনা দেখা দিয়েছে। এতে আয় হবে তিন থেকে ৪০ লাখ ডলার। এর মধ্যে ইউরোপের বেশ কয়েকটি দেশ বাংলাদেশ থেকে কুমির আমদানির আনুষ্ঠানিক প্রসত্মাব দিয়েছে। বিশ্বে বর্তমানে ৫০০-৬০০ মিলিয়ন ডলারের কুমিরের মাংসের বাজার রয়েছে। ২০০৮ সালে বিশ্ববাজারে প্রায় ৪০ হাজার কুমিরের চামড়া বেচাকেনা হয়েছে। ২০০১-০২ সালে সুন্দরবনের ৩০ হেক্টর জমির ওপর দেশে সর্বপ্রথম কুমির প্রজনন ও লালন-পালন কেন্দ্র গড়ে তোলা হয়েছে।
বাণিজ্যিক চাষের শুরম্ন যেখানে ময়মনসিংহ জেলার ভালুকা উপজেলা থেকে ১৭ কিলোমিটার দূরে উথুয়া ইউনিয়নের হাতিবেড় গ্রাম এখন কুমির চাষের মডেল। বলতে গেলে দেশে প্রথমবারের মতো কুমির চাষে বিপস্নব এই গ্রাম থেকেই। বেসরকারী প্রতিষ্ঠান রেপটাইলস ফার্ম লিমিটেড ২০০৪ সালে কুমিরের খামার প্রতিষ্ঠা করে। বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক সহ আরেকটি বাণিজ্যিক ব্যাংকের সহায়তায় গড়ে তোলা হয় এ খামার। ৭৫টি কুমির দিয়ে খামারের যাত্রা শুরম্ন। পরে কুমিরের ডিম থেকে কৃত্রিমভাবে বাচ্চা ফোটানো হয়। বর্তমানে এ খামারে কুমিরের সংখ্যা ৮২৫-এর বেশি। এর মধ্যে পনেরোটি পুরম্নষ। কুমিরের বৈজ্ঞানিক নাম-( ক্রোকোডিডিলাস পোরোসাস)। খামারে মোট কুমিরের মধ্যে ৬৭ বড় আকারের। চলতি বছর প্রজনন বাড়াতে আগামী বছর আরো ১০০ স্ত্রী কুমির আমদানি করবে খামার কতর্ৃপৰ। এ খামারে সব লোনা পানির কুমির। বিশ্বে লোনা পানির কুমিরের চাহিদা সবচেয়ে বেশি। বাংলাদেশ পরিবেশ ও বন মন্ত্রণালয় ২০০৪ সালের ৫ মে এ খামার প্রতিষ্ঠার অনুমোদন দেয়। পরে উদ্যোক্তারা আনত্মর্জাতিক সংস্থা 'সিআইটিইএসে'র অনুমাদন নিয়ে মালয়েশিয়ার সারওয়াত থেকে সোয়া কোটি টাকা ব্যয়ে ৭৫ কুমির আমদানি করে। ২০০৪ সালের ২২ মে কুমির খামারে ছাড়া হয় কুমির। হাতিবেড় এলাকায় কুমির চাষ প্রকল্প স্থাপনে ১৩ একর জমির মধ্যে চার একর জমির মাটি কেটে বৈজ্ঞানিক পদ্ধতিতে ৩২ পুকুর তৈরি করা হয়েছে। পুকুরগুলোর তলদেশ পাকা। তিন ফুট ইটের ওপর তিন ফুট কাঁটাতারের বেষ্টনী। প্রাকৃতিক পরিবেশে কুমির পালন ও বেড়ে ওঠা নিশ্চিত করার জন্য চারপাশে ৪০ প্রজাতির ছয় হাজার ফলদ, বনজ ও ঔষধি গাছ লাগানো হয়েছে। লাগানো হয়েছে কৃত্রিম ঘাসও। কুমিরের খাবার হিসেবে দেয়া হচ্ছে মাছ ও মাংস।
দেশের আবহাওয়া বিশেষজ্ঞরা বলছেন, বাংলাদেশের আবহাওয়া কুমির চাষের উপযোগী। বলতে গেলে সবকিছুই অনুকূলে। সামান্য উদ্যোগ সম্ভাবনাময় কুমির চাষের বিসত্মৃতি ঘটতে পারে দ্রম্নত। যার মাধ্যমে প্রচুর বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা আয় হবে। অর্থনৈতিক মুক্তিও সম্ভব। তাঁরা বলছেন, কুমিরের গড় আয়ু ১০০ বছর। ডিম নষ্ট হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা কম। বেশিরভাগ ডিম থেকেই বাচ্চা হয়। খামারের কুমির ৬/৭ বছর পর থেকেই ডিম দিতে শুরম্ন করে। খামারের বাইরে খোলা পানিতে চাষ করা হলে ডিম দিতে সময় লাগে ১৩/১৪ বছর। বাচ্চা ফুটতে সময় লাগে ৮০-৯০ দিন।
আগামী মাসে রফতানি শুরম্ন আগামী কয়েক দিনের মধ্যেই রফতানি পণ্যের তালিকায় যোগ হতে যাচ্ছে বিরল প্রজাতির পণ্য। দেশের একমাত্র কুমির চাষকারী খামার জানুয়ারির প্রথম সপ্তাহ থেকে কুমির রফতানি শুরম্ন করবে। প্রথম দফায় প্রায় এক শ' কোটি টাকার কুমির রফতানি করা হবে জার্মানিতে। রেপটাইলস ফার্ম কতর্ৃপৰ বলছে, প্রথম ধাপে রফতানি করা হবে ৭০-১০০টি কুমির। এর মধ্য দিয়ে বাংলাদেশ কুমির রফতানিকারক দেশের তালিকায় প্রথমবারের মতো নাম লেখাবে। গত ১০ ডিসেম্বর এ সংক্রানত্ম একটি প্রসত্মাব অনুমোদন দিয়েছে সরকার। সার্ক দেশগুলোর মধ্যে বাণিজ্যিক কুমির চাষের একমাত্র খামার ভালুকার ময়মনসিংহে অবস্থিত।
উদ্যোক্তারা বলছেন, আগামী ৫ বছরের মধ্যে কুমির চাষের দিক থেকে এটিই হবে বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে বড় খামার। বর্তমানে কুমির চাষের সবচেয়ে বড় খামার অস্ট্রেলিয়ায়। ২০১৪ সাল নাগাদ প্রতিবছর চার হাজার কুমির রফতানি করা সম্ভব হবে। এতে আয় হবে তিন থেকে চার মিলিয়ন ডলার। এর মধ্যে ইউরোপের বেশ কয়েকটি দেশ বাংলাদেশ থেকে কুমির আমদানির আনুষ্ঠানিক প্রসত্মাব দিয়েছে। উদ্যোক্তারা বলছেন, ২০১১-১২ সালের মধ্যে ভালুকায় কুমিরের খামার থেকে প্রতিবছর চার থেকে পাঁচ হাজার কুমিরের বাচ্চা বিভিন্ন দেশে রফতানি করা সম্ভব হবে।
বিশ্ব বাজার বিশ্ব বাজারে কুমিরের চাহিদা বেশ। মাংস, হাড় ও চামড়া_ এর কোন কিছুই ফেলে দেয়ার মতো নয়। সবকিছুই অর্থনৈতিক আয়ের উৎস। বিশ্বে বর্তমানে ৫০০-৬০০ মিলিয়ন ডলারের কুমিরের মাংসের বাজার রয়েছে। ২০০৮ সালে বিশ্ব বাজারে প্রায় ৪০ হাজার কুমিরের চামড়া বেচাকেনা হয়েছে। চীন, জাপান, তাইওয়ান, থাইল্যান্ডসহ বিভিন্ন দেশে কুমিরের মাংসের চাহিদা ব্যাপক। বর্তমানে অস্ট্রেলিয়া, থাইল্যান্ড, ভিয়েতনাম, সিঙ্গাপুর, পাপুয়া নিউগিনি, ইন্দোনেশিয়া, ভারত, শ্রীলঙ্কা, কোরিয়া, চীনসহ প্রায় অর্ধশত দেশে বাণিজ্যিকভাবে কুমিরের চাষ হচ্ছে। বর্তমানে থাইল্যান্ডসহ বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশ লোনা পানির কুমিরের চামড়া, হাড় ও মাংস যোগান দিচ্ছে। বিশ্বে সাত প্রজাতির কুমির চাষ হয়। এর মধ্যে লোনা পানির কুমির সবচেয়ে বেশি।
লবণ পানিতে কুমির চাষ সুন্দরবনের মধ্যে প্রায় দুই লাখ হেক্টর নদী ও নালায় লবন পানির কুমিরের সংখ্যা বৃদ্ধি ও সংরৰণের উদ্দেশ্যে করমজল এলাকায় ৩০ হেক্টর জমির ওপর দেশে সর্বপ্রথম কুমির প্রজনন ও লালন-পালন কেন্দ্র স্থাপন করা হয়। জীববৈচিত্র্য সংরৰণ প্রকল্পের প্রথম পর্যায়ে ৩২ লাখ টাকা ব্যয়ে ২০০১-০২ অর্থবছরে বিভাগীয় বন কর্মকর্তা, বন্যপ্রাণী ও টু্যরিজম বিভাগ খুলনার আওতায় অবকাঠামোগত নির্মাণের কাজ শেষ করে। এখানে বিলুপ্তপ্রায় তিন প্রজাতির কুমির আছে। বর্তমানে সুন্দরবন এলাকায় ১৫০ নদীতে প্রায় ২০০ কুমির আছে। যা ক্রমশ বিলুপ্তির পথে। কুমির প্রজনন কেন্দ্রের রোমিও-জুলিয়েট নামে একজোড়া কুমির দেশে বহুল আলোচিত। এই দু'টি কুমির ২০০৫ সালে প্রথমবারের মতো ১৯ ডিম দেয়, যা থেকে ষোলো বাচ্চা হয়। এরপর ২০০৬ সালে ডিম দেয় ৩৬, এর মধ্যে বাচ্চা মেলে ২৬ ডিম থেকে। ২০০৭ সালে ৪১ ডিম থেকে ২৯ বাচ্চা পাওয়া যায়। ২০০৮ সালে ফের ৪১ ডিম থেকে বাচ্চা মেলে ৩০। সর্বশেষ ২০০৯ সালে আবারও ৪১ ডিম থেকে ২৭ বাচ্চা পাওয়া গেছে। এদিকে ভালুকার ফার্ম থেকে ২০০৯ সালে সর্বশেষ প্রায় সাড়ে ৪০০ কুমিরের বাচ্চা জন্ম নিয়েছে।

সম্ভাবনাময় শিল্প কুমির চাষ

বাংলাদেশ কৃষিভিত্তিক দেশ। শস্য চাষের সাথে পশু পালন দিন দিন আবশ্যিক হয়ে উঠছে। দেশে গরু, ছাগল, মহিষ, ভেড়াসহ বিভিন্ন প্রজাতির প্রাণী লালন করা হয়। আর এরই অংশ হিসেবে প্রাণীজগতের অন্যতম নাম কুমির চাষ দেশে এখন ব্যাপক সাড়া ফেলেছে। বাণিজ্যিক প্রতিষ্ঠান হিসেবে এতদিন গার্মেন্টস শিল্প একচেটিয়া দখল করে ছিলো, এরপরে বিভিন্ন শিল্প ও কৃষিজ পণ্য, মৎস্যজাত ও ওষুধি দ্রব্য। কিন্তু এ ধারাবাহিকতার তালিকায় শ্রীঘ্রই ব্যাপক পরিবর্তন নিয়ে আসবে বাংলাদেশ ব্যবসায়িক ভিত্তিতে কুমির চাষ। মাত্র কয়েক বছরের মধ্যেই কয়েকগুণ মুনাফা আয় সম্ভব। ময়মনসিংহের ভালুকায় অবস্থিত "রেপটাইলস ফার্ম লি." এর উৎকৃষ্ট উদাহরণ। কয়েক বছর পরেই এ ছোট খামার থেকে বছরে প্রায় ১৫ কোটি টাকার চামড়া বিদেশে রপ্তানি সম্ভব।

ময়মনসিংহের মত কুমিরের এ রকম আরেকটি ফার্ম হচ্ছে আকিজ গ্রুপের আকিজ ওয়াইল্ড লাইফ ফার্ম লিমিটেড।নাইক্ষ্যংছড়ি উপজেলা সদর থেকে ৪৫ কিলোমিটার দূরে, ঘুমধুম ইউনিয়নের দুর্গম পাহাড়ি এলাকা তুমব্রু গ্রামে এটি অবস্থিত। গ্রামটি মিয়ানমার সীমান্তের একেবারে কাছাকাছি। যেখানে কুমির দেখার পাশাপাশি পাহাড়চূড়া থেকে মিয়ানমারও দেখা যায়। কক্সবাজার-টেকনাফ মহাসড়কের উখিয়া টিভি রিলে কেন্দ্রের সামনে দিয়ে গহিন অরণ্যের দিকে চলে যাওয়া আঁকাবাঁকা পথে গেলে কুমিরের এই বিচরণক্ষেত্র পরিদর্শন করা যায়।
৩০ একরের বেশি পাহাড় ঘিরে কুমিরের এই প্রজননকেন্দ্রটি স্থাপন করেছে ব্যবসাপ্রতিষ্ঠান আকিজ গ্রুপের আকিজ ওয়াইল্ড লাইফ ফার্ম লিমিটেড। ২০০৯ সালের মার্চে কুমির চাষের জন্য পাহাড়ের বিশাল অংশজুড়ে নির্মাণ করা হয় অবকাঠামো এবং বর্তমানে এর কার্যক্রম চলছে।

ব্যবসায়িকভাবে দেশে আগমন
ময়মনসিংহ শহরের অদূরে অবস্থিত ভালুকা একটি ছোট শহর। এর তীর ঘেঁষে মাত্র ১৫ একর জমির উপর গড়ে উঠেছে "রেপটাইলস ফার্ম লি."। ২০০৪ সালে ডিসেম্বর মাসে মালয়েশিয়া থেকে ৭৫টি বয়স্ক কুমির নিয়ে মোস্তাক আহমেদ ও মেজবাউল হকের ব্যক্তিগত উদ্যোগে ও বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের আর্থিক সহযোগিতায় এই কুমির ফার্মের অগ্রযাত্রা শুরু হয়। এর মধ্যে ৭টি কুমির কিছু দিনের মধ্যে মারা যায় এবং বেঁচে থাকে ৬৯টি কুমির । এগুলোর মধ্যে ১৩টি পুরুষ ও ৫৪টি স্ত্রী কুমির। ২০০৪ সালে প্রথম প্রথম ৩টি বাচ্চা পাওয়া যায়। ২০০৭ সালে বাচ্চার সংখ্যা দাঁড়ায় ৪১টি। বর্তমানে এই সংখ্যা ১৩৯টি। তবে এ বছর ৪০০ বাচ্চা আশা করা হচ্ছে।

খাবার পদ্ধতি
বাচ্চাগুলো খুবই অনুভূতি প্রবণ, বদরাগী এবং অভিমানী। তাই মাত্র একজন ব্যক্তিকেই প্রতিদিন খাবার দিতে হয়। হঠাৎ ব্যক্তির পরিবর্তন হলে বাচ্চাগুলো খাবার খাওয়া বন্ধ করে দিবে এবং অনাহারে মারা যাবে। ছোট বাচ্চদের প্রতিদিন তাদের শরীরের ২০ ভাগ খাবর দিতে হয়। মুরগির মাংসকে কিমা করে বাচ্চাদের খাওযাতে হয়। বড় কুমিরদের সপ্তাহে একদিন ওজনের শতকরা ২০ ভাগ খাবার দিতে হয়। মাসের প্রথম ও দ্বিতীয় সপ্তাহে মুরগির মাংস, তৃতীয় সপ্তাহে গরুর মাংস এবং শেষ সপ্তাহে মাছ খাবার হিসেবে দিতে হয়।

চাষ পদ্ধতি
প্রাথমিক খরচ কিছুটা বেশি হলেও সম্পূর্ণ নিরাপদে ও নিশ্চিন্ত পরিবেশে কুমির চাষ বাংলাদেশের আবহাওয়ার উপযোগী। কুমির চাষের জন্য সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হলো প্রজনন সময়ে কুমিরের প্রতি অধিক যত্মবান হওয়া যেন পুরুষ কুমিরের সাথে স্ত্রী কুমিরের প্রতিযোগিতা না হয়। একটি কুমির সর্বাধিক ৮০টি ডিম দেয় এবং বেশিরভাগ ডিম পাড়ে ঘাসে ও কাদাযুক্ত মাটিতে। ডিম ফুটার সাথে সাথেই তা সংগ্রহ করে ইনকিউবেটরে দেয়ার ব্যবস্থা করতে হয়। তবে এক্ষেত্রে আর্দ্রতা ও তাপমাত্রা নিয়ন্ত্রণ সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। পুরুষ কুমিরের উৎপাদন চামড়ার কদর বেশি তাই এক্ষেত্রে তাপমাত্রা বেশি দিয়ে পুরুষ কুমিরের চামড়ার কদর বেশি তাই এক্ষেত্রে তাপমাত্রা বেশি দিয়ে পুরুষ কুমিরের উৎপাদন বাড়ানো যায়। বাচ্চা কিছুদিন খুব যত্ম সহকারে ছোট পুকুরে রাখতে হবে। এ সময় খাবারের প্রতি ও ছত্রাক রোগের প্রতি যত্মশীল হতে হবে। কয়েক মাস বয়সের বাচ্চাদের পৃথক পৃথক পুকুরে স্থানান্তর করে নিয়মিত পরিচর্যা করলেই দুই বছরেই চামড়া সংগ্রহ করা যায়।

প্রজনন সময়
কুমির সাধারণত বর্ষাকালে প্রজননে মিলিত হয় এবং এর এক সপ্তাহের মধ্যে ডিম দেয়। একটি কুমির ২০-৮০ টি ডিম দেয়। তবে, ভালুকায় এখন পর্যন্ত গড় ডিম দেয়ার পরিমাণ ৬১ টি যা এ বছর মোট সংখ্যা দাঁড়িয়েচে ৯৪৪টি। ডিম ফুটে বাচ্চা বের হতে ৩২ ডিগ্রী সেলসিয়াস তাপমাত্রায় সময় লাগে ৮০ দিন। নিয়ন্ত্রিত আর্দ্রতা ও তাপমাত্রা সম্পূর্ণভাবে থাকলে শতকরা ৮৫ ভাগ বাচ্চা বের হতে সময় বেশি লাগে। মজার বিষয় হলো, তাপমাত্রায় পার্থক্যের কারণে বাচ্চা পুরুষ বা স্ত্রী হতে পারে। তাপমাত্রা ৩১-৩২ ডিগ্রী সেলসিয়াস হলে পুরুষ হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা বেশি থাকে। তাপমাত্রা ৩০ ডিগ্রী এর কম হলে স্ত্রী বাচ্চা বেশি পাওয়া যায়। কুমিরের জনগণের নাগালের বাইরে রাখতে হয়।

রোগ-বালাই
কুমিরের সাধারণত রোগবালাই হয় না বললেই চলে। ব্যবস্থাপনা ও পরিচালনা ভালো থাকলে সারা বছর বিনা চিকিৎসায় কুমিরকে সুস্থ রাখা সম্ভব। ছোট কুমিরের ছত্রাক জাতীয় রোগ বেশি হয়। তবে, এই দীর্ঘ ৫ বছরে এ ফার্মে এ ধরনের কোন রোগ দেখা যায়নি। প্রজনন মৌসুমে ও খাবার প্রতিযোগিতার সময় কুমির আহত হতে পারে। এছাড়াও খেয়াল রাখতে হবে যে, মানসিক ও শারীরিকভাবে ছাড়াও স্থানান্তর ও পরিবহনের সময় যাতে কুমিরের উপর কোন স্ট্রেস না পড়ে।

ব্যবসায়িক লাভ
১) ২০০৯ সালে কুমিরের চামড়া প্রথম বাংলাদেশ হতে রপ্তানি হয়। প্রথমদিকে রপ্তানির পরিমাণ কম হলেও ২০১২ সন নাগাদ এর পরিমাণ দাঁড়াবে প্রায় ১২ কোটি টাকা।
২) বহির্বিশ্বে ২৫ ডলারে কুমিরের মাংস বিক্রি হয়।
৩) ১২ ডলার দামে বিক্রি হয় ১ বর্গ সে.মি চামড়া।
৪) কুমিরের চামড়া হতে বেল্ট ও লেডিস পার্টস তৈরি হয়।
৫) হাড় হতে পারফিউম তৈরি হয়।
৬) দাঁত হতে গহনা তৈরি হয়।
৭) পায়ের থাবা হতে চাবির রিং তৈরি হয়।
৮) কুমিরের মাংস বেশ সুস্বাদু ও পুষ্টিকর তাই দেশে ও বিদেশে চাহিদা প্রচুর।

চাষের এলাকা
বাংলাদেশের প্রায় সব জায়গাই কুমির চাষের উপযোগী। তবে দেশের দক্ষিণাঞ্চলের জন্য কিছু লবণাক্ততা সহনশীল প্রজাতির কুমির রয়েছে। উত্তরবঙ্গের জন্য স্বাদু পানির কিছু কুমির পাওয়া যায়। তবে এই ফার্মে স্বাদু পানির কুমির চাষ করা হয।

বিশেষ সুবিধা
অন্যান্য কয়েক সেক্টরের বিভিন্ন ভাইরাল রোগের চরম আতঙ্ক থাকলেও এই সেক্টরে তা একেবারেই নেই। তাই অপার সম্ভাবনার এই শিল্পকে বাংলাদেশে জোরদার করে এবং চামড়া প্রক্রিয়াজাত করলে পোলট্রি ও গার্মেন্টস সেক্টরের মতো এই সেক্টর হতেও ব্যবসায়িকভাবে হাজার হাজার কোটি টাকা বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা অর্জন করা সম্ভব। তবে সরকারি ও বেসরকারি আর্থিক সহযোগিতা একান্ত কাম্য।
উল্লেখ্য, এ ফার্মে যে ইনকিউবেটর ব্যবহার হয়, তা বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে আধুনিক। ব্যবস্থাপনা ও পরিচর্যা খুব নিখুঁত হওয়ায় এখন পর্যন্ত তেমন রোগের প্রাদুর্ভাব ঘটেনি। শীঘ্রই রেপটাইলস ফার্ম বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা অর্জনে ও দেশের উন্নয়নে ভূমিকা রাখবে।

ঢাকা, মে ২২ (বিডিনিউজ টোয়েন্টিফোর ডটকম) - বাংলাদেশে বাণিজ্যিকভাবে চাষ করা কুমিরের চামড়া ও দেহাংশ প্রথমবারের মতো আগামী ডিসেম্বর থেকে রপ্তানি হতে যাচ্ছে। উদ্যোগটির সঙ্গে সংশ্লিষ্টরা একথা জানিয়েছেন।

ময়মনসিংহে অবস্থিত দেশের একমাত্র কুমির চাষকরা প্রতিষ্ঠান 'রেপটাইলস'এর প্রধান নির্বাহী কর্মকর্তা মুশতাক আহমেদ সম্প্রতি বিডিনিউজ টোয়েন্টিফোর ডটকমকে বলেন, "আগামী ডিসেম্বর থেকে আমরা কুমির রপ্তানি শুরু করতে পারবো বলে আশা করছি। প্রথম ব্যাচে ১০০ কুমির রপ্তানি করা হবে।"

মুশতাক আহমেদ জানান, রপ্তানির মধ্যে কুমিরের চামড়াই প্রধান পণ্য হবে। এছাড়া মাংস, হাড় ও দাঁত মিলিয়ে প্রতিটি কুমির দেড় হাজার ডলার পর্যন্ত বিক্রি করা করা যাবে।

২০০৪ সালের ডিসেম্বরে মালয়েশিয়া থেকে ক্রোকোডাইলাস পরোসাস প্রজাতির ৭৫টি নোনাপানির কুমির এনে ময়মনসিংহের ভালুকার উথুরাতে কুমির চাষ শুরু করে রেপটাইলস। অভিজাত পণ্য তৈরির জন্য বিশ্বে এ প্রজাতির কুমিরের চামড়ার প্রচুর চাহিদা রয়েছে। ১৫ একর জমির ওপর খামারটি করে রেপটাইলস।

মালয়েশিয়া থেকে আনা ৭৫টির মধ্যে ৮টি কুমির মারা যায়। বেঁচে থাকা ৬৭টির মধ্যে ৫৫টি ছিল মাদী। এর মধ্যে ২১টি কুমিরের দেওয়া ডিম থেকে ২০০৭ ও ২০০৮ সালে ৩৮২টি বাচ্চা হয়। বাকি ৩৪টি কুমিরও শিগগিরই ডিম পাড়া শুরু করবে বলে কর্তৃপক্ষ আশা করছেন।

ক্রেতা পেতে কোনও সমস্যা হবে না জানিয়ে মুশতাক আহমেদ বলেন, সাধারণত দুই থেকে আড়াই বছর বয়স হলেই কুমিরের চামড়া রপ্তানি করা যায়।

"২০১৫ এর মধ্যে এ খামারে আমরা ১৫ হাজার কুমির চাষ করতে চাই। বছরে ৫ হাজার কুমির রপ্তানি করতে চাই আমরা।"

শুধু কুমির চাষই করবে না রেপটাইলস, তারা একে পর্যটন কেন্দ্রও করতে চায়।

কুমির চাষের সুবিধা উল্লেখ করে মুশতাক বলেন, এতে শ্রমিক কম লাগে। কুমিরের অসুখও কম হয়।

মুশতাক আহমেদ জানান, প্রথমে ৫ কোটি টাকা বিনিয়োগ করেছিলেন তারা। এখন বিনিয়োগের পরিমাণ দাঁড়িয়েছে প্রায় ৮কোটি টাকা।

শীতের সকালও যে সরগরম হতে পারে, প্রমাণ মিলল এ মাসের ১৭ ও ১৮ তারিখে। পৌষের শুরুর দিকের সেই দুটি দিনে সাভারের ব্র্যাক টার্কে বসেছিল মেধাবিকাশ শিক্ষা সমাবেশ ২০১০-এর আসর। প্রায় ৬০০ মেধাবী তরুণ ছিলেন সেই আসরের প্রাণ। ব্র্যাকের আর্থিক সহায়তায় যাঁরা কিনা এখন শিক্ষার সিঁড়ি পেরোচ্ছেন বিভিন্ন পর্যায়ে। সমাবেশটির আয়োজন করেছিল ব্র্যাক শিক্ষা কর্মসূচির মেধাবিকাশ উদ্যোগ। আর বলা বাহুল্য, সেই আয়োজনে তরুণদের সরব উপস্থিতির দাপটেই শীতের হিম আবহাওয়া একদম পাত্তা পায়নি।
সমাবেশের প্রথম দিন, ১৭ তারিখে, অনুষ্ঠান শুরু হয় সকাল সাড়ে নয়টায় উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠানের মধ্য দিয়ে। সেখানে প্রধান অতিথি ছিলেন স্যার ফজলে হাসান আবেদ। বিশেষ অতিথিদের মধ্যে ছিলেন বিশ্বসাহিত্য কেন্দ্রের সভাপতি আবদুল্লাহ আবু সায়ীদ, বাংলাদেশ প্রকৌশল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধ্যাপক মোহাম্মদ কায়কোবাদ, প্রধানমন্ত্রীর একান্ত সচিব নজরুল ইসলাম খান। উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠানে স্বাগত বক্তব্য দেন ব্র্যাক শিক্ষা কর্মসূচির পরিচালক শফিকুল ইসলাম, সভাপতিত্ব করেন ব্র্যাক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ইনস্টিটিউট অব এডুকেশনাল ডেভেলপমেন্টের সিনিয়র অ্যাডভাইজার মনজুর আহমদ।
শিক্ষার মাধ্যমে সুবিধাবঞ্চিতদের আলোকিত করতে ব্র্যাক ব্যাপক ও বিস্তৃত শিক্ষা কর্মসূচি বাস্তবায়ন করে আসছে। দুই দশক ধরে সরকারি ও বেসরকারি উদ্যোগে প্রাথমিক ও মাধ্যমিক শিক্ষার ব্যাপক প্রচার, প্রসার ও সহযোগিতার ফলে দরিদ্র পরিবারগুলো থেকেও প্রতিবছর বেশ কিছু মেধাবী ছাত্রছাত্রী বেরিয়ে আসছেন। ব্র্যাক ‘মেধাবিকাশ কার্যক্রমে’র মাধ্যমে অর্থনৈতিকভাবে অপেক্ষাকৃত অসচ্ছল পরিবারের ছাত্রছাত্রীদের সহায়তায় এগিয়ে এসেছে। ২০০৫ থেকে এ পর্যন্ত ১১৮৭ জন শিক্ষার্থীকে সহায়তার হাত বাড়িয়ে দিয়েছে ব্র্যাক। এদের মধ্যে আবার ৩৬ শতাংশই ব্র্যাক প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষার্থী ছিল। আর এখন এই ১১৮৭ জনের মধ্যে স্নাতক পর্যায়েই আছেন ২৩০ জন। এ ছাড়া মেধাবিকাশ কর্মসূচির সহায়তায় দেশের বাইরেও পড়াশোনা করছেন বেশ কজন শিক্ষার্থী।
আবদুল্লাহ আবু সায়ীদ তাঁর বক্তৃতার পুরো সময়টুকু মজিয়ে রাখেন ছাত্রছাত্রীদের। বলেন, ‘মানুষ আলোকিত হয় না; আলোকিত হওয়ার চেষ্টা করে মাত্র। আর এই চেষ্টাটাই আলোকিত হওয়া। তোমরাও নিশ্চয়ই এই চেষ্টাটাই করবে, আলোকিত হবে, দেশকে দেখাবে আলোর পথ।’ মোহাম্মদ কায়কোবাদও আশাবাদী নতুন প্রজন্মকে নিয়ে। তবে বর্তমান শিক্ষাব্যবস্থার ত্রুটি নিয়েও নিজের হতাশার কথা বলেন তিনি। নজরুল ইসলাম খান বাতলে দেন শিক্ষার মাধ্যমে সহজ ও উপযোগী পথে এগিয়ে যাওয়ার কথা। প্রধান অতিথির বক্তব্যে স্যার ফজলে হাসান আবেদ বলেন, ‘ব্র্যাকের এই কর্মসূচিকে আরও সমৃদ্ধ এবং ব্যাপক আকারে নিয়ে যেতে আমরা বদ্ধপরিকর। বিশেষ করে এই কর্মসূচিতে মেয়েদের অংশগ্রহণ সামনে আরও বাড়িয়ে ৫০ শতাংশে উন্নীত করা হবে।’
উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠানের পরে মেধাবিকাশের প্রায় ৬০০ শিক্ষার্থী মিলে তৈরি করেন বাংলাদেশের একটি মানচিত্র। ছাদ থেকে সেই দৃশ্য ক্যামেরায় বন্দী করেন আলোকচিত্রীরা। ফটোসেশন শেষ হলে দুপুর বারোটার দিকে শুরু হয় বিতর্ক ও প্যানেল আলোচনা।
অংশগ্রহণকারী সবাই ছিলেন মেধাবিকাশ কর্মসূচির শিক্ষার্থীরাই। বিতর্ক প্রতিযোগিতায় উপস্থিত ছিলেন শিল্পী মুস্তাফা মনোয়ার, নটরডেম কলেজের অধ্যক্ষ ফাদার বেঞ্জামিন কস্তা। প্যানেল আলোচনায় ছিলেন টিকিউআই-সেপ-এর প্রকল্প পরিচালক ও যুগ্ম সচিব নজরুল ইসলাম ও মনজুর আহমদ।
সমাবেশে অংশ নেওয়া তরুণেরা এসেছেন দেশের নানা প্রান্ত থেকে। তাঁদের কেউ কেউ পড়ছেন মাধ্যমিক পর্যায়ে, কেউবা উচ্চমাধ্যমিকে আর কেউ কেউ স্নাতক পর্যায়ে। তাঁদের মধ্যে ছিলেন রাজশাহীর তাসলিমা খাতুন, পঞ্চগড়ের রুমি বেগম, গাইবান্ধার মোসলেমা আক্তার ও চাঁপাইনবাবগঞ্জের পাপিয়ে জাহান। ছেলেদের দলটাই ভারী ছিল, ভারী সেই দলের ময়মনসিংহের আবদুল্লাহ আল নোমান, কুড়িগ্রামের মো. আরিফুজ্জামান, রংপুরের পল্লব গোস্বামী, রাজশাহীর আহমেদ, ঢাকার আবদুস সালাম, দেবাশীষ বিশ্বাসদের সঙ্গে কথা হলো। তাঁদের প্রত্যেকের মুখেই একই প্রত্যয়, ‘ব্র্যাকের কাছ থেকে আমরা যে সহায়তা পেয়েছি, তা কাজে লাগাতে চাই। এতগুলো বড় বড় মানুষের সাহচর্য পেলাম—এটাও একটা বড় প্রাপ্তি। আমরাও বড় হয়ে দেশের জন্য, মানুষের জন্য ভালো কিছু করব।’
দুপুরের বিরতি শেষে শুরু হয় মুক্ত আলোচনা। আলোচক ছিলেন কথাসাহিত্যিক ইমদাদুল হক মিলন। মানবিক গুণাবলি বিকাশে সাহিত্য নিয়ে কথা বলেন তিনি। সূর্য তখন পশ্চিমে হেলে পড়েছে, ধীরে ধীরে জমতে শুরু করেছে শীতের আঁধার। ঘড়িতে বিকেল পাঁচটা। শুরু হয় সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান। সূচনা বক্তব্য দেন ব্র্যাকের পেইসের মহাব্যবস্থাপক জয়া সেন গুপ্তা। আর এর পরই মেধাবিকাশের শিক্ষার্থীদের আরেক প্রস্থ মেধার পরিচয়। কুইজ প্রতিযোগিতা দিয়ে শুরু। তারপর নাচ-গান। এতে অংশ নেন দেশের বিভিন্ন অঞ্চল থেকে আসা মেধাবিকাশের বেশ কজন শিক্ষার্থী। আর ১৭ তারিখের আয়োজনের শেষ হয় জনপ্রিয় ব্যান্ডদল শিরোনামহীনের গান দিয়ে।
দ্বিতীয় দিনের শুরুতেই ছিল মুক্ত আলোচনা। মুখ্য আলোচক ছিলেন প্রথম আলো সম্পাদক মতিউর রহমান। তিনি মুক্তিযুদ্ধ ও তারুণ্য নিয়ে আলোচনা করেন। ব্র্যাক নেটের সভাপতি আবদুল মুয়ীদ চৌধুরী ছিলেন এই আলোচনা অনুষ্ঠানের সভাপতি। এরপর চারজন সফল মানুষ তাঁদের চলার পথের প্রতিবন্ধকতা নিয়ে আলোচনা করেন। এঁরা হলেন পারসোনার ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক কানিজ আলমাস খান, বিডি জবসের সিইও একে এম ফাহিম মাশরুর, রেপটাইল ফার্ম লিমিটেডের পরিচালক মুশতাক আহমেদ ও জাতীয় দলের শ্যুটার সাবরিনা সুলতানা। ব্র্যাক প্রশিক্ষণ বিভাগের সাব্বির আহমেদ চৌধুরী এ পর্বের সভাপতি ছিলেন। এ পর্বটি পরিচালনা করেন প্রথম আলোর উপ-ফিচার সম্পাদক জাহীদ রেজা নূর।
সমাপনী অনুষ্ঠানে প্রধান অতিথি ছিলেন বিজ্ঞান এবং তথ্য ও যোগাযোগপ্রযুক্তি মন্ত্রণালয়ের প্রতিমন্ত্রী ইয়াফেস ওসমান। বিশেষ অতিথি হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন লেখক অধ্যাপক হায়াৎ মামুদ ও শিক্ষা মন্ত্রণালয়ের অতিরিক্ত সচিব সিরাজুল ইসলাম। সভাপতি ছিলেন ব্র্যাকের নির্বাহী পরিচালক ড. মাহবুব হোসেন। অধ্যাপক হায়াৎ মামুদের একটি কথা দিয়েই লেখাটি শেষ করতে চাই। তিনি এই শিক্ষার্থীদের জানান, শিক্ষার্থীরা তাঁকে ভয় পায় না, তিনি কাউকে ভয় দেখান না। ভালোবাসা থেকে সবকিছু জন্মায়। ভয় থেকে ভালো কিছু হয় না। তিনি বলেন, ‘আমরা সম্মিলিতভাবেই মুক্তিযুদ্ধে অংশ নিয়েছিলাম। আমরা মুক্তিযুদ্ধের কথা বলি, এ কথাগুলো বিশ্বাস থেকে বলা দরকার, অন্তর থেকে বলা দরকার।’
শিক্ষার্থীরা দুটি দিন নিজেদের তৈরি করে নেওয়ার মতো অনেক রসদ পেয়ে গেলেন। এ রকম মিলনমেলা মাঝে মাঝেই হওয়া দরকার।

বিশ্বায়নের প্রবাহে রপ্তানির পণ্য বহুমুখীকরণ আবশ্যক

যে কথা না বললেই নয়

চলতি অর্থবছরের আট মাস পার হয়ে গেছে। এখন অর্থনীতির বিভিন্ন খাতের প্রবণতাগুলোর একটা হিসাবনিকাশ হচ্ছে। এক্ষেত্রে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় হলো-অর্থবছরের প্রথমার্ধে গার্মেন্টসসহ দেশের সব খাতের রপ্তানি আয়ে নেতিবাচক প্রবণতা লক্ষ্য করা গেছে। রপ্তানি উন্নয়ন ব্যুরোর প্রতিবেদন অনুযায়ী, এই সময়ে ৬.২ শতাংশ মাইনাস বা ঋণাত্মক প্রবৃদ্ধি হয়েছে, যা ৭.৭২ মার্কিন ডলারের সমান।
গার্মেন্টস রপ্তানি হয়েছে ৫.৫৯ বিলিয়ন মার্কিন ডলার, আগের বছরের একই সময়ে (জুলাই-ডিসেম্বর) তুলনায় ৭.৫ শতাংশ ঋণাত্মক। রপ্তানি উন্নয়ন ব্যুরোর হিসাব অনুযায়ী, ডিসেম্বরেই ৮৮৫ মিলিয়ন ডলার অর্থাৎ ১২ শতাংশ হ্রাস পেয়েছে। বিজিএমইএ সভাপতি বলেছেন, মন্দা কাটতে শুরু করায় গত দুই-তিন মাসে আমদানিকারকদের তাগিদ বাড়তে শুরু করেছে। অথচ স্থানীয় প্রস্তুতকারকরা ভুগছেন মারাত্মক জ্বালানি সঙ্কটে। মন্দায় দুর্বল হয়ে পড়া রপ্তানিকারকদের আত্মবিশ্বাস ফিরিয়ে আনার ব্যাপারে সরকারের হেলাফেলার প্রতিও ইঙ্গিত করেছেন। তিনি এ-ও বলেছেন, গত ডিসেম্বরে রপ্তানি আয়ের যে রিপোর্ট তা রপ্তানি শিল্প পরিস্থিতি সম্পর্কে সরকারের দৃষ্টি অবশ্যই উন্মোচিত করতে পারে। ডিসেম্বরের রপ্তানি আয়ের অঙ্ক হতাশাজনক বলে উল্লেখ করে বিকেএমইএ সভাপতি বলেছেন, স্থানীয় রপ্তানিকারকরা ক্রমাগত প্রতিযোগিতার সক্ষমতা হারাচ্ছেন। প্রতিযোগী অন্যান্য দেশে অবকাঠামো সুবিধা ও সরকারি প্রণোদনার কারণে আমদানিকারকদের অধিকতর ডিসকাউন্ট দিতে পারছে। ডিসেম্বরে গার্মেন্টস শিপমেন্ট হ্রাস পাওয়াতেই রপ্তানি পরিস্থিতি নেতিবাচক হয়ে পড়েছে।
রপ্তানি খাতে এরকম নেতিবাচক প্রবণতা নিঃসন্দেহে উদ্বেগজনক। বাংলাদেশের অর্থনীতির বড় সহায়ক তৈরি পোশাক রপ্তানি খাতের আয়। অন্যটি প্রবাসীদের পাঠানো রেমিটেন্স অর্থাৎ জনশক্তি রপ্তানি খাত। বিরাজমান রপ্তানি ধরে রাখতে হবে। এটাই প্রথম কথা এবং অপরিহার্য কথা। পরবর্তী কথা হলো, রপ্তানি আয় বৃদ্ধির লক্ষ্যে প্রচলিত খাতগুলোর সামর্থ্য বাড়াতে হবে এবং অপ্রচলিত খাতের প্রতি মনোযোগী হতে হবে। সেই সঙ্গে উভয় খাতের জন্য বিরাজমান বাজারের বাইরেও নতুন বাজার অনুসন্ধান করতে হবে। দেশের অর্থনীতির স্বার্থে এই কাজে সংগঠকের ভূমিকা পালন করতে হবে সরকারের সংশ্লিষ্ট মন্ত্রণালয়, বিভাগ ও সংস্থাগুলোকে। দেশীয় উৎপাদক ও রপ্তানি কারকদের উদ্দীপ্ত ও সামর্থ্যবান করে তোলার লক্ষ্যে বাস্তবোচিত কার্যকর উদ্যোগ গ্রহণ ছাড়া এটা সম্ভব নয়। তারও আগে জ্বালানিসহ সার্বিক অবকাঠামো সুবিধা সমপ্রসারণের পদক্ষেপ নিতে হবে। দ্বিতীয়ত, দেশের আইনশৃঙ্খলা পরিস্থিতির ব্যাপক উন্নয়ন ঘটাতে হবে। রাজনৈতিক অস্থিরতা থেকে দেশকে অবশ্যই মুক্ত রাখতে হবে। কেননা দেখা গেছে, অর্থনৈতিক মন্দা উৎপাদন ব্যবস্থায় যতটা বিরূপ প্রভাব বিস্তার করে, তার চেয়ে অর্থনীতিকে কম প্রভাবিত করে না রাজনৈতিক অস্থিরতা। শুধু উৎপাদন নয়, বিনিয়োগ, কর্মসংস্থান_সবই মারাত্মকভাবে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হয়। বাংলাদেশের অতীত অভিজ্ঞতায় এর যথেষ্ট দৃষ্টান্ত রয়েছে। বাংলাদেশ উন্নয়ন ফোরামের বৈঠকে দাতা প্রতিনিধিরা জনপ্রশাসনের সংস্কার এবং জাতীয় সংসদকে অর্থবহ করে তোলার ওপর গুরুত্বারোপ করে বলেছেন, প্রধান দুই দলের বাড়াবাড়ি গণতন্ত্রকে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত করছে। তারা দুর্নীতি দমনে ধীরগতিতে উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করে বলেছেন, এ জন্য সরকারের সার্বিক উন্নয়ন কার্যক্রমের বাস্তবায়ন বাধাগ্রস্ত হচ্ছে। এ ছাড়া বিদ্যুৎ খাতের ব্যবস্থাপনা দক্ষতা, বিকল্প জ্বালানি ব্যবস্থা, নবায়নযোগ্য জ্বালানির ওপর সর্বাধিক গুরুত্ব আরোপ করেছেন তারা। বিদ্যুৎ জ্বালানির মূল্য সমন্বয়ের কথা বলার পাশাপাশি তারা পাবলিক-প্রাইভেট পার্টনারশিপের মাধ্যমে বিশেষ করে এডিবি, বিশ্বব্যাংক ও আইডিবি বিদ্যুৎ খাতে বিনিয়োগে আগ্রহ প্রকাশ করেছে।
উন্নয়ন ফোরামে দাতারা স্বাভাবিকভাবেই তাদের দৃষ্টিকোণকেই প্রাধান্য দিয়ে থাকেন। তারপরও মাঝে মধ্যেই দেখা যায়, বাংলাদেশ সম্পর্কে তাদের বক্তব্যে বাহির্বিশ্বের দৃষ্টিকোণটিও প্রতিফলিত হয়। এসব ক্ষেত্রে বাংলাদেশের শিক্ষণীয় হিসেবে গ্রহণের কিছু বিষয় থাকে। রাজনৈতিক স্থিতিশীলতা রক্ষা করে গণতন্ত্রকে কার্যকর করা, জ্বালানিসহ সার্বিক অবকাঠামো উন্নয়নে দুর্নীতি নিরসন করার মতো বিষয়গুলো প্রাধান্য না দেয়ার অর্থ হবে পিছিয়ে যাওয়া। এসব ক্ষেত্রে হুমকি-ধমকি দিয়ে নয়, বাস্তবতার পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে সব বিষয়ের নিরপেক্ষ বিবেচনা এবং তার নিরিখে উপর্যুক্ত ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণই অপরিহার্য। সর্বপোরি উৎপাদন, রপ্তানি তথা অর্থনৈতিক ক্ষেত্রে সরকারের সহায়তা শুধু নামে নয় বরং বাস্তবে সক্রিয় করতে হবে। প্রসঙ্গক্রমে উল্লেখ্য, চীন ও ভারতের মতো দেশগুলোতে শুরুতে বিশ্বমন্দার ব্যাপক আঘাত এসেছে। অনেক বেশি ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হয়েছে এসব দেশের অর্থনীতি। তারপরও যথাসময়ে যথাযথ পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণ করায়, তারা ইতোমধ্যে অনেক এগিয়ে গেছে। বাংলাদেশে বিশ্বমন্দা যে তেমন আঘাত করেনি, এটা মোটামুটি সব মহল থেকেই বলা হয়েছে। অর্থনীতিবিদদের পক্ষ থেকে এমন বলা হয়েছিল যে, মন্দাকালীন পরিস্থিতির সুযোগ গ্রহণ করে বাংলাদেশের রপ্তানি বাজার সমপ্রসারণ সক্ষম হতে পারে। কিন্তু বাস্তবক্ষেত্রে দেখা গেল, চলতি অর্থবছরে প্রথমার্ধে রপ্তানি আয় হ্রাস পেয়েছে। এই বাস্তবতাকে সামনে রেখে সরকারকে যেমন সত্যিকার অর্থে প্রণোদনাদায়ক পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণ করতে হবে, তেমনি উৎপাদক ও রপ্তানিকারকদেরও সতর্ক উদ্যোগ ও সযত্ন প্রয়াস চালিয়ে যেতে পারে।

সম্প্রতি একটি জাতীয় দৈনিক পত্রিকায় প্রকাশিত 'অপ্রচলিত পণ্য রপ্তানির তালিকায় কুমির' শীর্ষক প্রতিবেদনটি দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করার দাবি রাখে। খাল কেটে কুমির আনা প্রবচনটি দেশে পরিচিত। কিন্তু কুমির চাষ বা কুমিরের খামার করেও যে কোটি কোটি টাকার বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা অর্জন সম্ভব, এটা অনেকেরই অজানা। কুমির বাণিজ্যের সম্ভাবনাকে নিশ্চিত করেছেন ময়মনসিংহের ভালুকায় দেশের একমাত্র কুমির খামারের উদ্যোক্তা কতিপয় দূরদৃষ্টিসম্পন্ন তরুণ। ২০০৪ সালে রেপটাইলস নামের একটি বাণিজ্যিক কুমির খামার গড়ে তুলে মালয়েশিয়া হতে প্রায় ১ কোটি ২৫ লাখ টাকা ব্যয় করে আমদানি করেন ৬০টি স্ত্রী ও ১৫টি পুরুষসহ ৭৫টি কুমির। খামারের ১৫ একর জমির মধ্যে প্রায় ৫ একর জমির ২০০ হাজার বর্গফুট পুকুর এলাকায় ছেড়ে দেয়া হয় এ সব আমদানি করা কুমিরকে। প্রতি বছর প্রজনন বৃদ্ধি পাওয়ায় বর্তমানে এ খামারে কুমিরের বাচ্চা লালন পালন করা হচ্ছে ৮০৫টি। ইতোমধ্যে রপ্তানিযোগ্য হয়েছে শতাধিক কুমিরের বাচ্চা। এ সব কুমিরের বাচ্চা রপ্তানি করে প্রায় ৫ মিলিয়ন ডলার আয় করা সম্ভব হবে বলে জানা গেছে। এইভাবে কুমির চাষ করে ২০২১ সাল নাগাদ শুধু কুমির রপ্তানি খাতে একশ' মিলিয়ন ডলার আয় করা সম্ভব বলে আশা করছেন সংশ্লিষ্টরা।
দেশের রপ্তানি খাত বলতে সাধারণত তৈরি পোশাক শিল্প, হিমায়িত খাদ্য, চা, চামড়া ইত্যাদি কয়েকটি প্রধান পণ্যের ওপরে সরকারি ও বেসরকারি উদ্যোক্তাদের মনোযোগ নিবদ্ধ। কিন্তু এসব প্রধান রপ্তানি পণ্যের বাজার আন্তর্জাতিক প্রতিযোগিতাসহ নানা কারণেই পিছিয়ে পড়ার হুমকির মধ্যে রয়েছে। এ পরিস্থিতিতে রপ্তানি বাণিজ্যের প্রবৃদ্ধি ধরে রাখতে প্রচলিত পণ্যের সম্ভাবনাকে খতিয়ে দেখাটা জরুরি। যেমন, কুমিরের রপ্তানি সম্ভাবনা প্রসঙ্গে সংশিষ্টরা মনে করেন, আন্তর্জাতিক বাজারে কুমিরের প্রক্রিয়াজাত মাংস, চামড়া, হাড় কোন কিছুই ফেলনা নয়। বিশ্ববাজারের এই চাহিদা মেটাতে চীন, থাইল্যান্ড, মালয়েশিয়া, ভারত, কোরিয়া, ভিয়েতনাম, অস্ট্রেলিয়া, ইন্দোনেশিয়া, শ্রীলঙ্কাসহ বিভিন্ন দেশে বাণিজ্যিকভাবে কুমিরের চাষ হচ্ছে। একটি সূত্র মতে, ২০০৯ সালে বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশ হতে আন্তর্জাতিক বাজারে প্রায় ৫০ হাজার কুমিরের হাত বদল হয়েছে। এ প্রেক্ষাপটে কুমিরের খামার ও কুমির রপ্তানির উদ্যোগ মোটেও অবাস্তব মনে হয় না। তবে বেসরকারি এই উদ্যোগের সাফল্য নির্ভর করবে সরকারের রপ্তানি নীতি ও বন বিভাগের সহযোগিতার ওপর। দেশে প্রধান রপ্তানি পণ্য হিসেবে যেসব পণ্য বিদেশে রপ্তানি হচ্ছে, তার একটি সিস্টেম বা পদ্ধতি গড়ে উঠেছে। ত্রুটি ও প্রতিবন্ধকতা বিদ্যমান থাকলেও উদ্যোক্তারা পরিচিত পণ্যের ক্ষেত্র সরকারি সাহায্য সহযোগিতা ও সহজে পেয়ে থাকেন। কিন্তু যেসব উদ্যোক্তা নতুন বাজার সৃষ্টির জন্য প্রয়াসী, তাদের ব্যাপারে সরকার অধিক যত্নশীল না হলে দেশের রপ্তানি বাণিজ্যে কাঙ্ক্ষিত প্রবৃদ্ধি ঘটবে না।
দেশে ভেষজ উদ্ভিদ চিরতা চাষ ও রপ্তানির সম্ভাবনা নিয়েও কিছুদিন আগে পত্রিকায় একটি প্রতিবেদন প্রকাশিত হয়েছে। টুপি, ফুল, ফুলের ঝাড়ু, শিকা, নকশিকাঁথা, শতরঞ্চি হতে শুরু করে শুঁটকি মাছের অাঁশ-বহু অপ্রচলিত পণ্য রপ্তানি করেও রপ্তানি আয় বাড়ানো সম্ভব প্রমাণিত হয়েছে। খোঁজ করলে দেখা যাবে, উন্নত বিশ্বের কলকারখানায় জোগান দেয়ার মতো বহু কাঁচামালের উৎপাদন ও জোগান দেয়া বাংলাদেশের পক্ষে উদ্যোগ নিলেই সম্ভব। দেশে শিল্পকারখানা গড়ে যে সব পণ্যকে কাঁচামাল হিসেবে ব্যবহার করতে পারছে না, সেইসব পণ্য রপ্তানি করে আমরা অর্জন করতে পারি বিপুল পরিমাণ বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা। বহির্বিশ্বে লাখ লাখ প্রবাসী বাংলাদেশী দেশের অপ্রচলিত বহু পণ্যের রপ্তানি সম্ভাবনাকেও জোরদার করেছে।
বাংলাদেশে আমদানি ও রপ্তানি বাণিজ্যের মধ্যে ভারসাম্য আনতে রপ্তানি পণ্যের বহুমুখীকরণ ও ভলিউম বৃদ্ধির বিকল্প নেই। এর জন্য বহির্বিশ্বে রপ্তানি বাজার খুঁজতে বেসরকারি উদ্যোক্তাদেরও এগিয়ে আসতে হবে। শুধু সরকারের ওপর নির্ভর করে থাকলে রপ্তানির বাজার সমপ্রসারিত হবে না। তবে অপ্রচলিত পণ্য রপ্তানিতে উদ্যোক্তাদের প্রয়োজনীয় সাহায্য-সহযোগিতা দেয়ার বিষয়টি সরকারকে অবশ্যই গুরুত্ব দিতে হবে।

প্রকারান্তরে প্রকাশিত খবর থেকে জানা যায়, গত অর্থবছরের জুলাই থেকে ফেব্রুয়ারি এ আট মাসের তুলনায় চলতি অর্থবছরের আট মাস অর্থাৎ জুলাই থেকে ফেব্রুয়ারি পর্যন্ত অর্জিত রপ্তানি আয় ৩.২১ শতাংশ কমে গেছে। আর লক্ষ্যমাত্রার তুলনায় এ আয় কম হয়েছে ১১.২৯ শতাংশ। গত বছরের ফেব্রুয়ারি মাসের তুলনায় চলতি বছরের ফেব্রুয়ারি মাসে রপ্তানি আয় সামগ্রিকভাবে কিছুটা বেড়েছে। কিন্তু উদ্বেগের বিষয় হলো, সামগ্রিকভাবে রপ্তানি আয় কিছুটা বৃদ্ধি পেলেও নিট পোশাক এবং ওভেন গার্মেন্টসের মতো প্রধান রপ্তানি খাতসমূহের আয় কমে গেছে। অন্যদিকে প্রবাসীদের পাঠানো বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা অর্থাৎ রেমিটেন্সও তুলনামূলকভাবে হ্রাস পেয়েছে। যেসব খাতে রপ্তানি আয় কমেছে সেগুলো হলো, কাঁচা তরকারি, ক্যামেরা যন্ত্রাংশ, নিট পোশাক, ওভেন গার্মেন্টস, টেক্সটাইল ফেব্রিক্স, চা, হিমায়িত খাদ্য এবং সিরামিক সামগ্রী। পক্ষান্তরে যেসব খাতে রপ্তানি আয় বেড়েছে সেগুলো হলো_ কাঁচা পাট, পাটজাত দ্রব্য, ইলেকট্রনিক সামগ্রী, পেট্রোলিয়াম বাই প্রোডাক্ট, কারিগরি পণ্য, টেরিটাওয়েল, তামাকজাত পণ্য, ওষুধ প্রভৃতি। এগুলোর মধ্যে তামাকজাত পণ্য বাদ দিলে অন্যান্য পণ্যে রপ্তানি আয়ের প্রবৃদ্ধি সর্বনিম্ন ৪১ শতাংশ এবং সর্বোচ্চ ৮১ শতাংশ। এ পরিসংখ্যান থেকে কয়েকটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় বেরিয়ে আসে। সেগুলো হলো, এতদিন ধরে যেগুলো ট্র্যাডিশনাল আইটেম বা প্রচলিত পণ্য হিসেবে গণ্য হয়ে আসছে সেগুলোর রপ্তানি কমতে শুরু করেছে। পক্ষান্তরে যেসব পণ্য নন-ট্র্যাডিশনাল আইটেম বা অপ্রচলিত পণ্য হিসেবে পরিগণিত হয়েছে সেগুলোর রপ্তানি বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে। আরও দেখা যাচ্ছে, আমাদের রপ্তানি তথা রপ্তানি আয়ের একটি নতুন প্যাটার্ন ধীরে ধীরে বিকশিত হচ্ছে। এ প্যাটার্ন দেখে আগামী দিনে আমাদের রপ্তানি স্ট্র্যাটেজি নিয়ে নতুন করে ভাবনা-চিন্তা করার প্রয়োজন আছে বলে আমরা মনে করি।
বাংলাদেশের অর্থনীতিকে যারা কিছুটা গভীরভাবে পর্যবেক্ষণ করেছেন তারা জানেন, গার্মেন্টস সেক্টর ছাড়া শিল্পের কোন উল্লেখযোগ্য বিকাশ ঘটেনি। এখন আমাদের অর্থনীতির প্রধান দুটি স্তম্ভ হলো রপ্তানিমুখী তৈরি পোশাক শিল্প এবং জনশক্তি রপ্তানি। আর এ দুটি খাত থেকে বাংলাদেশ বছরে প্রায় ২০ বিলিয়ন ডলার অর্থাৎ ২ হাজার কোটি ডলার আয় করছে। কিন্তু এ দুটি প্রধান খাতে অতি সমপ্রতি যে নিম্নমুখী প্রবণতা লক্ষ্য করা যাচ্ছে, সেটা যদি অব্যাহত থাকে তাহলে ভবিষ্যতে আমাদের অর্থনীতি মারাত্মক বিপর্যয়ের মুখে পড়তে পারে। এখন পর্যন্ত রপ্তানি ক্ষেত্রে বিকল্প বাজার বা বিকল্প পণ্য উল্লেখযোগ্যভাবে উদ্ভাবিত হয়নি। উভয় ক্ষেত্রেই বাংলাদেশের জন্য এক্সপোর্ট ডেস্টিনেশন বা রপ্তানির চূড়ান্ত গন্তব্য হলো আমেরিকা এবং ইউরোপের বাজার। অথচ পৃথিবীর বৃহত্তম মহাদেশ এশিয়া, আরও দুটি মহাদেশ-আফ্রিকা ও লাতিন আমেরিকা এবং পূর্ব প্রান্তে অস্ট্রেলিয়ার বাজার তেমন গুরুত্বের সঙ্গে অনুসন্ধান করা হয়েছে বলে জানা যায়নি। অনুরূপভাবে তৈরি পোশাক শিল্প ছাড়া আর কোন কোন পণ্য আমেরিকা ও ইউরোপ ছাড়া এশিয়া, আফ্রিকা, অস্ট্রেলিয়া ও লাতিন আমেরিকার বাজার পেতে পারে সে ব্যাপারেও কোন সিরিয়াস স্টাডি করা হয়েছে বলে জানা যায়নি। শুরুতেই যেসব পরিসংখ্যান দেয়া হয়েছে সেখানে দেখা যাচ্ছে পাট এবং পাটজাত দ্রব্য যেগুলো সেদিনও ছিল অতীতের স্মৃতি, সেগুলো আবার সোনালী যুগে ফিরে যাওয়ার সম্ভাবনায় উজ্জ্বল হয়ে উঠছে। এ দুটি পণ্য ছাড়া অপ্রচলিত পণ্যের বাজার কীভাবে বহুমুখী হতে পারে সে ব্যাপারেও এখন থেকেই গভীরভাবে চিন্তা-ভাবনা করা দরকার। রপ্তানির বাজার এবং রপ্তানি পণ্যকে বহুমুখী করার জন্য অবিলম্বে রপ্তানি উন্নয়ন ব্যুরোকে সক্রিয় ভূমিকা গ্রহণ করতে হবে। বাংলাদেশের প্রায় সব বৈদেশিক দূতাবাসে রয়েছে একটি বাণিজ্যিক শাখা। দূতাবাসমূহের এসব বাণিজ্যক শাখার বিরুদ্ধে নিষ্ক্রিয়তা এবং উদাসীনতার অভিযোগ অনেক পুরনো। এ অভিযোগ থেকে আজও তারা মুক্ত হতে পেরেছে বলে মনে হয় না। অথচ এসব ট্রেড এটাশে, ট্রেড কমিশনার বা ট্রেড মিনিস্টার এবং তার অধীনস্তদের কাজই হলো সেই দেশে বাংলাদেশের কোন কোন পণ্য বাজার পেতে পারে এবং প্রতিযোগিতামূলক মূল্যে তাদের কোন কোন পণ্য বাংলাদেশে প্রবেশ করতে পারে সে সম্পর্কে খোঁজখবর নেয়া। এখন তারা প্রচলিত পণ্যের ক্ষেত্রে বাজার বহুমুখী করার চেষ্টা করবে এবং যেসব দেশে তারা কর্মরত আছেন সেসব দেশে অপ্রচলিত কোন কোন পণ্য বাজার পেতে পারে সেগুলোও গুরুত্বের সঙ্গে অনুসন্ধান করবেন বলে জনগণের প্রত্যাশা। এ কথা সত্য, সামগ্রিকভাবে বাংলাদেশের রপ্তানি রেটিংস ভাল। কিন্তু সেটিকে কীভাবে টেকসই করা যায় সে বিষয়টিও তাদেরকে গভীরভাবে ভাবতে হবে।
এ সব সমস্যার আগে রয়েছে আরও বড় সমস্যা। তা হলো প্রয়োজনীয় অবকাঠামো নির্মাণ এবং অব্যাহত বিদ্যুৎ সংযোগ প্রদান। শুধুমাত্র রপ্তানি খাতের কথাই বলব কেন, এখন তো সময়ের আবর্তনে এটি দিবালোকের মতো স্পষ্ট হয়ে যাচ্ছে, বিদ্যুৎ এবং অবকাঠামোর অভাবে কোন বিদেশী বিনিয়োগ এদেশে বলতে গেলে আসছে না। একই কারণে অভ্যন্তরীণ বিনিয়োগের ক্ষেত্রেরও স্থবিরতা সৃষ্টি হয়েছে। গার্মেন্টসের প্রধান দুটি খাত ওভেন ও ওনট সেক্টরের প্রধানরাও গত দু-তিন দিন আগ স্পষ্ট ভাষায় বলেছেন, নিরবচ্ছিন্ন বিদ্যুৎ সংযোগ না পেলে তারা তাদের রপ্তানির প্রবৃদ্ধি ধরে রাখতে পারবেন না। কেউ কেউ অবশ্য তাদের রপ্তানি মার্কেট ধরে রাখার জন্য জেনারেটর দিয়ে বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদন করছেন। কিন্তু দেখা যাচ্ছে, এর ফলে উৎপাদন খরচ অস্বাভাবিক হারে বেড়ে যাচ্ছে। এখন তারাও বলছেন, এভাবে উৎপাদন খরচ বাড়িয়ে তারা রপ্তানির বাজারে টিকে থাকতে পারবেন না। কারণ এর ফলে প্রতিযোগিতার বাজারে তারা পিছিয়ে পড়ছেন। সবশেষে একটি কথা। বহুল প্রচলিত একটি কথা হলো : 'হয় রপ্তানি করো, না হয় ধ্বংস হও'। জাতীয় উন্নয়ন ও অর্থনৈতিক সমৃদ্ধি অর্জনে রপ্তানির যে বিকল্প নেই, এ কথা থেকে মূলত তাই বুঝানো হয়েছে। কাজেই রপ্তানি বাড়াতেই হবে এবং এ জন্য বিদ্যুৎ সরবরাহ ও অবকাঠামো নির্মাণকে অর্থনৈতিক পরিকল্পনায় সর্বোচ্চ অগ্রাধিকার দিতে হবে।

ছিপছিপে গড়ন। পেশায় ছিলেন গাইড। পেশাগত কারণেই যেতে হত নানা দেশে। পরিচয় হত নানা পেশার মানুষের সঙ্গে। এ পর্যন্ত সব কিছু ঠিকঠাকই চলছিল। ২০০৩ সালে হঠাৎ গাইডের কাছ ছেড়ে দিলেন। নেমে পড়লেন ব্যবসায়।

কিন্তু সে কি আর যে সে ব্যবসা! এমন ব্যবসার চিন্তা এই অঞ্চলে এর আগে আর কেউ করেননি। বন্ধু-বান্ধব, আত্মীয়-স্বজনের ওজরআপত্তি ঠেলে ঢাকার ছেলে মুস্তাক আহমেদ ময়মনসিংহের ভালুকায় গিয়ে কয়েক একর জমি কিনে গড়ে তুললেন কুমিরের খামার। আর তাতেই এল সাফল্য। সেই খামার থেকে চলতি বছর জার্মানিতে ১০০টি কুমির রফতানি হয়েছে। যার দাম প্রায় ১ কোটি টাকা। মুস্তাক জানান, আগামী কয়েক বছরে তাঁর ফার্মগুলি থেকে অন্তত ৪-৫ হাজার কুমির রফতানি করা হবে। জার্মানি, ফ্রান্স, ইতালি, তাইল্যাণ্ড-সহ বিশ্বের একাধিক দেশে কুমিরের চাহিদা রয়েছে।

বাংলাদেশের একটি কুমির খামার

মাত্র পাঁচ বছরের ব্যবধানে গাইড মুস্তাক হয়ে গেলেন বাংলাদেশের প্রতিষ্ঠিত কুমির ব্যবসায়ী। আর তার প্রতিষ্ঠান এখন এই উপমহাদেশের প্রথম কুমির রফতানি কৃতিত্বের দাবিদার। তাঁর দেখানো পথেই বাংলাদেশে গড়ে উঠেছে কুমিরের বেশ কয়েকটি খামার। এর মধ্যে রয়েছে পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রামের পাহাড় বেষ্টিত বান্দারবানে। আকিজ ওয়াইল্ড লাইফ ফার্মের ব্যবস্থাপনায় নাইখ্যাংছড়ির ধুমধুম ইউনিয়নে ২৫ একর জায়গায় গড়ে উঠেছে কুমির প্রজননের নতুন প্রকল্প। প্রায় ৩৫০টি কুমির রাখার ব্যবস্থা রয়েছে এখানে। স্ত্রী-পুরুষ মিলিয়ে প্রায় ৫০টি অষ্ট্রেলিয়ান প্রজাতির কুমির এখানে রাখা হয়েছে। মালয়েশিয়া থেকে একটি কুমির আনতে খরচ হয়েছে প্রায় ৩ লক্ষ টাকা।

মুস্তাক জানালেন, এক বছর লালন পালনের পর একটি কুমির থেকে ৮ থেকে ১০ লক্ষ টাকা আয় করা সম্ভব। মূলত বিদেশে রফতানি করতেই এই খামার গড়ে তোলা হয়েছে। প্রকল্প পরিচালক আনোয়ার হোসেন জানান, খোলা জায়গা এবং খাঁচায়, দুই পদ্ধতিতেই এখানে কুমির চাষ হয়। পাহাড়ের নীচে জলাশয় তৈরি করে সেখানে ছেড়ে দেওয়া হয়েছে ২৫টি কুমির। আর খাঁচায় রয়েছে আরও ২৫টি। প্রতি সপ্তাহে ৫ কিলোগ্রাম করে তাদের মাছ খেতে দেওয়া হয়।

নয়া প্রকল্প নিয়ে কথা বলতে গিয়ে মুস্তাক বলছিলেন তাঁর অভিজ্ঞতার কথা। সেটা ২০০৩ সাল। তখনও খামারের গোড়া পত্তন হয়নি। ব্যবসা করতে গেলে সরকারি অনুমতি লাগে। কিন্তু এ তো আর এলেবেলে ব্যবসা নয়। একেবারে কুমির চাষ।

তাই শুধু ট্রেড লাইসেন্সে চলে না। প্রয়োজন হয় আরও বিভিন্ন দফতরের অনুমতির। আর সেখানেই নানা সমস্যা। হাজারও প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিতে দিতেই এক বছর কেটে গেল। শেষে ২০০৪-এ ‘রেপটাইল ফার্ম লিমিটেড’-এর সরকারি ছাড়পত্র মিলল। সেই বছরই ডিসেম্বরে ১২-১৪ বছর বয়সের ৭৫টি কুমির আনা হয়।

২০০৭-এ ওই কুমির ১৪০টি ডিম দেয়। ২০০৮-এ পাওয়া যায় ২৪০টি ডিম। পরে ওই ডিম থেকে কৃত্রিম উপায়ে বাচ্চা হয়। বর্তমানে এই খামারে ৮০০-রও বেশি কুমির রয়েছে। মুস্তাক বলেন, নোনা জলের ৪ বছর বয়সী একটা কুমির অন্তত দেড় থেকে ২ হাজার ডলারে বেচা হচ্ছে জার্মানি বা ফ্রান্সের মতো দেশে। কুমিরের পাশাপাশি তিনি বিভিন্ন প্রজাতির কচ্ছপ ও কাঁকড়া চাষ করার কথাও ভাবছেন

বাংলাদেশে মানুষখেকো কুমিরের বাণিজ্যিক চাষ

গরু বা ঘোড়া নয় একবারে মানুষখেকো প্রাণী কুমিরের বাণিজ্যিক চাষ হচ্ছে বাংলাদেশে৷ এবছরের মাঝামাঝি সময় এই কুমিরের চামড়া রপ্তানি করে বাংলাদেশ প্রথমবারের মতো অর্জন করে বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা৷

যার পরিমাণ ২০১৫ সাল নাগাদ হবে ৫মিলিয়ন ডলার৷

বাংলাদেশের মতো উন্নয়নশীল দেশের জন্য গল্পটা খুবই অবাক করার মতো ৷ যখন বাংলাদেশের একজন তরুণ তার সমস্ত বুদ্ধি এবং অর্থ দিয়ে একটি কুমিরের খামার করার চিন্তা করলো তখন, তাকে অনেকেই পাগল ভেবেছিল৷ তাই এই প্রকল্পের অনুমতির জন্য সে সরকারের কাছে আবেদন করলে, তার আমলাতান্ত্রিক জটিলতা পার হতে লেগেছে বেশ কিছু বছর৷

তারপর বহু কাটখড় পুড়িয়ে ২০০৫ সালের শেষের দিকে মালয়েশিয়া থেকে ৭৫টি বয়স্ক কুমির নিয়ে মুশতাক আহমেদ ব্যক্তিগত উদ্যোগে ও বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের আর্থিক সহযোগিতায় এই কুমির খামারের অগ্রযাত্রা শুরু করেন৷ নাম দেয়া হয় মোস্তাক আহমেদ রেপটাইলস ফার্ম লিমিটেড৷এর মধ্যে ৭ টি কুমির কিছু দিনের মধ্যে মারাও যায় ৷ বেঁচে থাকে ৬৯ টি কুমির৷ যার মধ্যে ১৩ টি পুরুষ ও ৫৪ টি মেয়ে কুমির৷

ফার্মটি রাজধানী ঢাকা থেকে ১১০ কিলোমিটার দূরে ময়মনসিংহ জেলার ভালুকাতে৷ এখানে কুমিরের প্রথম বংশ বৃদ্ধি হয় ২০০৬ সালে৷ জন্ম নেয় ৩টি বাচ্চা৷ ২০০৭ সালে বাচ্চার সংখ্যা দাঁড়ায় ৪১ টি৷ আর বর্তমানে কাচ্চ-বাচ্চা মিলিয়ে মোট কুমিরের সংখ্যা চারশর কিছু বেশি৷

ফার্মের মালিক মোস্তাক আহমেদ বলছেন, প্রথমে তাকে সবাই পাগল ভাবলেও তিনি জানতেন এটি একটি লাভজনক প্রকল্প৷ তাইতো তিনি পিছপা হননি৷

তিনি একটি সংবাদ সংস্থাকে জানান, এবছরের শেষেই ফার্ম থেকে বাচ্চা কুমির এবং চামড়া বিদেশে রপ্তানি করা হবে৷ তিনি আরো বলেন ইউরোপের বেশ কিছু দেশ ইতোমধ্যেই এব্যাপারে আগ্রহ প্রকাশ করেছে৷

তিনি আশা প্রকাশ করে বলেন, বিশ্ব জুড়ে যে অর্থনৈতিক মন্দা চলছে তার কোন প্রভাবই এই কুমিরের চামড়া বা অন্যান্য আনুসঙ্গিক জিনিস রপ্তানির ক্ষেত্রে পড়বে না ৷ কারণ যারা এর ক্রেতা হবেন তারা বিপুল অর্থের মালিক৷ এবং শখের বশেই এগুলো কিনে থাকেন৷

উল্লেখ্য, কুমিরের চামড়া, দাঁত এবং হাড় থেকে খুব দামি চামড়ার কাপড় বা বেল্ট, দাঁত বা হাড় দিয়ে অলংকার এবং সুগন্ধী তৈরি করা হয়৷ বলা হয়ে থাকে কুমিরের মাংস বেশ সুস্বাদু ও পুষ্টিকর৷ তাই বিশ্বের অনেক দেশে এর চাহিদাও প্রচুর৷

আহমেদ বলেন, বর্তমানে অষ্ট্রেলিয়া, থাইল্যান্ড এবং মালয়শিয়াতে কুমিরের খামার থাকলেও বাংলাদেশ রপ্তানির ক্ষেত্রে বিশেষ সুবিধা পাবে ৷ কারণ ইউরোপের সঙ্গে বাংলাদেশের বিশেষ আমদানি শুল্ক চুক্তি রয়েছে৷

বাংলাদেশের কুমির এখন আন্তর্জাতিক অঙ্গনে। কুমির চাষ এ দেশে ক্রমেই বিস্তার লাভ করায় কুমির রপ্তানি হচ্ছে আন্তর্জাতিক বাজারে। কুমির রপ্তানিকারকদের তালিকায় যুক্ত হলো একটি নতুন নাম_বাংলাদেশ। ময়মনসিংহের ভালুকায় অবস্থিত রেপটাইলস ফার্ম লিমিটেড দেশের এবং আন্তর্জাতিক আইন মেনে গত জুনে প্রথমবারের মতো নিজস্ব খামারে উৎপাদিত ৬৭টি হিমায়িত কুমির জার্মানির হাইডেলবার্গ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে রপ্তানি করে। চলতি মাসে ছোট-বড় মিলিয়ে আরো প্রায় ৪০০ হিমায়িত কুমির রপ্তানি করা হবে। এমন সংবাদ মিলেছে পত্রপত্রিকার মাধ্যমে। ফ্রান্স, জার্মানি, স্পেন, ইতালিসহ বেশ কিছু দেশ বাংলাদেশ থেকে কুমির আমদানির আগ্রহ দেখিয়েছে, যা আমাদের জন্য আশাব্যঞ্জক। ভবিষ্যতে কুমির রপ্তানির সংখ্যা বাড়তেই থাকবে, যা দেশের অর্থনীতিতে বড় ধরনের ইতিবাচক ভূমিকা রাখবে। বাংলাদেশে আত্মকর্মসংস্থানের বিষয়টি অত্যধিক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। কারণ, এ দেশে কর্মসংস্থানের সুযোগ খুব সীমিত। কিন্তু এ দেশের মানুষকে আত্মনির্ভরশীল হয়ে ওঠার অনেক পথ খোলা আছে, যদি যথাযথ দিকনির্দেশনা ও সহযোগিতার দরজা প্রশস্ত করা যায়। এমনই একটা নতুন ক্ষেত্র কুমির চাষ। বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশে বিশেষ করে অস্ট্রেলিয়া, চীন, ভিয়েতনাম, থাইল্যান্ড, কোরিয়া, ইন্দোনেশিয়া, শ্রীলঙ্কা, মালয়েশিয়া ও ভারতে কুমির চাষ হচ্ছে বেশ কিছু দিন আগে থেকেই। তবে শীর্ষস্থান দখল করে আছে অস্ট্রেলিয়া। কুমিরের মাংসের চাহিদা রয়েছে ইউরোপসহ এশিয়ার অনেক দেশ ও অস্ট্রেলিয়ায়। বর্তমানে আন্তর্জাতিক বাজারে বছরে ৫০০ মিলিয়ন ডলারের কুমিরের মাংসের চাহিদা রয়েছে। ভোক্তা দেশগুলোর বাজারে প্রতি কেজি কুমিরের কাঁচা মাংস ১৫-২০ ডলার আর প্রক্রিয়াজাত মাংস ১৮০-২০০ ডলারে বিক্রি হয়ে থাকে। কুমিরের কোনো কিছুই ফেলনা নয়। এর দাঁত, হাড়ও চড়া মূল্যে বিক্রি হয়। পাকা চামড়ার চাহিদা রয়েছে ইউরোপ, আমেরিকা, মধ্যপ্রাচ্যসহ অনেক ধনী দেশে। ফ্রান্স ও চীনে প্রক্রিয়াজাত করা কুমিরের চামড়ার প্রতিটি ব্যাগ ৫০ হাজার ডলারে বিক্রি হয় ধনী দেশগুলোতে। কুমিরের দাঁত থেকে তৈরি হচ্ছে মূল্যবান গহনা। হাড়ের নির্যাস থেকে ফ্রান্সে তৈরি করা হয় অতি মূল্যবান সুগন্ধি, যা বিশ্বের অভিজাত শ্রেণী ব্যবহার করে থাকে। বাংলাদেশে রেপটাইলস ফার্ম লিমিটেড প্রকল্পের যাত্রা শুরু হয় ২০০৪ সালে। ব্যক্তি উদ্যোগে গড়ে তোলা হয় সম্পূর্ণ রপ্তানিভিত্তিক এই কুমিরের খামার। রপ্তানি খাতে এক নতুন ও উজ্জ্বল সম্ভাবনার পথ তৈরি করে দিল এ প্রকল্পটিও। দৃষ্টান্ত যেহেতু আমাদের সামনে সৃষ্টি হয়েছে, এখন এটি যাতে আরো বিস্তৃত করা যায় সে লক্ষ্যে উদ্যোগ নেওয়া প্রয়োজন। এর ফলে একদিকে বেকারদের স্বাবলম্বী হয়ে ওঠার পথ প্রশস্ত হবে, অন্যদিকে দেশের অর্থনীতি হবে সমৃদ্ধ।

Mushtaq Ahmed and Rita Alam chronicle the journey from an avid planner of an apparently impossible scheme to starting Ahmed’s own crocodile farm in the outskirts of Mymensingh where he now houses one of nature’s most dangerous reptile species
It has been six years since Rommo and I thought up the idea of starting a crocodile farm. Never did I think that I would really be able to go through with it but that didn’t stop me from dreaming. I remember a lot of people thought I was practically bonkers, penniless and drifting from one trade to another, not making any real sense of my life in conventional Bangladeshi terms. How is he supposed to start a crocodile farm? Everyone wondered. I had always wanted to do something out of the ordinary and perhaps that made me a black sheep but I proved I could make the impossible happen. Today, I sit on the balcony of my farm-bungalow, looking over green rice fields in the northwest and the crocodile pens all around spanning the east-side from north-south with 67 crocodiles. It is a sublime evening, the sun setting after an hour of rain. I look around taking stock of where the crocodile farm stands now. Getting here was not easy, running the farm is fun I admit but establishing this farm was painful...but I also have to say it has been quite adventurous. I capitalised on the connections and relationships I had formed with various zoologists while working as a guide for the Guide Tours in the Sundarbans. I am especially grateful to Anisuzzaman Khan who helped in thinking out the project. Rommo had left Dhaka for London, while I continued planning and formulated a business plan which I submitted to ATDP-II in January 2003. ATDP-II was a USAID project that funded agro-based businesses. April 24, 2003. ‘….we are pleased to inform you that your business plan has been accepted.’ I couldn’t believe my eyes. I started preparing for the presentation of the business plan. I shared this with my uncle, Mesbahul Hoque who I knew had good and shrewd business sense. Mesbahul Hoque, Shejo Mama to me, assured me that this plan would work and that he would help me to raise funds for the venture. With ATDP’s fourth prize I felt I had already made it half-way. Little did I know of how many speed-breakers and potholes I would have to face on the way. With the help of Charles Uphaus, an USAID director, I got in touch with Romulus Whitaker, the crocodile man of South Asia who came to Bangladesh on a mission sponsored by USAID. I accompanied Romulus on his visit to the Bagerhat Shrine to see the eggs of the famous ‘Kala Pahar’ (‘Black Mountain’) and ‘Dhola Pahar’ (‘White Mountain’), the two last remaining crocodiles of the fresh water species, Crocodylus palustris in Bangladesh. Romulus gave me my first lesson on crocodiles during the visit and he told me that my business plan was excellent, commenting; ‘Now all you need are the crocodiles…’ Romulus’s approval of my business plan further reassured Shejo Mama about starting a crocodile farm and so we began searching for a suitable site. We registered Reptiles Farm Ltd officially in September 2003 and consulted further with Dr Reza Khan about the technical aspects of the establishment. I mention the names of these people because of the invaluable support and inspiration they gave me for the project. In October 2003, we applied to the government for the permission to establish Bangladesh’s first crocodile farm. For six months I pursued the government for approval and at the same time talked to and interviewed many people for my crocodile team. Selecting and purchasing the right piece of land was pretty challenging. We looked at places in and around Gazipur and Mymensingh. Getting just the right piece of land with a supportive community was difficult but we finally settled on 15 acres in Uthura, under Bhaluka Upazilla, 14km from Mymensingh Road. Getting hold of this land took a whole year. Twice a week for a whole year I had to pursue the purchase and then obtain ownership of the land – I had to travel 15,000 km to acquire the property! Meanwhile, six months after applying, we were granted permission by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MOEF) to set up the farm. Bangladesh Enterprise Institute introduced me to South Asian Enterprise Development Facility (SEDF) who helped with the registration formalities and other business details. SEDF appointed a team of financial experts who along with us prepared the feasibility study which was primary to getting the loan from the Bangladesh Bank – Equity and Entrepreneurship Fund unit. From the initial application to first disbursement in October 2005 was a long fourteen-month period. What I had not taken into account in my project plan was the number of times I would have to visit Bangladesh Bank to satisfy bureaucratic meetings. I actually wore out the soles of my favourite pair of leather shoes given to me at my wedding by my in-laws. I can remember attending many Bangladesh Bank meetings in my very, very tattered shoes. October 16, 2004, 28 months after Rommo’s idea, the crocodile farm went into operation. It also happened to be the first day of Ramadan. I, along with my team of four others travelled from Dhaka to Uthura without a clue of where we’d be sleeping or eating. All we had in our heads was that we had to build 14 ponds to accommodate 75 crocodiles due to arrive at the end of December. Natu, an old villager who lived on the edge of land we had purchased, saved us from starvation. He gave us our first full meal. We bought him a chicken and his wife made rice, dal and a delicious chicken curry which we ate under an olive tree. Natu still works with us; the crocodile farm is his life. The next day Munshi, another old man living on our land, was appointed as cook. We rented a house nearby where we only went to sleep at night. During the day it was back-breaking labour so we were grateful for whatever Munshi cooked. We had no option to be choosy. The menu was chicken curry, lau-dal and mixed vegetables everyday. Our dining room depended on the position of the sun over a berry tree. At night it was by candlelight as there was no electricity. In November 2004 we had our first battery operated light and this gave us a very valid cause to celebrate that evening. In just 60 days, 300,000cft earth was moved using manual labour and 14 ponds built complete with water supply and plumbing while we still didn’t have a proper toilet. The crocodiles’ needs were our first priority. Living and working in Uthura would not have been easy without the support of the villagers. Everyday there would be someone bringing a chicken, or vegetables from their farms for us, inquiring about our work and trying to help us in anyway they could. During the festival seasons of Eid there were numerous invitations for lunch and dinner. I am really grateful for their support and friendliness. On December 22, 2004 I went to Zia International Airport to receive the crocodile consignment. In 45 specially made boxes came 75 crocodiles. I transported these with police escort to the farm in five trucks where we reached at Fazr around 5:30am. All the way from the airport to the farm was a nightmare. The road was the worst in living memory and I was concerned that the crocodiles would not be able to recover from the trauma of being shaken so vigorously for such a continuous stretch of time. There was also the fear of having an accident and losing the crocodiles. Thankfully we arrived without any major incident. Just receiving the crocodiles was another milestone for me. It felt like a dream that the venture was actually unfolding in reality. I had to pinch myself time-to-time to check whether or not I was actually awake. Releasing the crocodiles was another story. Twenty of us started opening the crocodile boxes at eleven in the morning and it was no easy feat handling these intensely aggressive reptiles. Unfortunately when we opened the boxes, one male crocodile, 12.6 feet long had already died sometime during the journey from Malaysia. There were incidents of being almost bitten by one while another small female crocodile measuring eight feet jumped causing the cameraman and his assistant to run leaving behind their video equipment. At the end of the day all the crocodiles were transferred to the ponds without any major injury. Acclimatisation for the crocodiles took quite a while. Changing environments was quite strenuous for them, arriving in Bangladesh in extreme winter. It was almost three years before we got our first proper batch of crocodile babies which have now grown to over three feet. In August 2006, only two crocodiles laid a total of 67 eggs of which three hatched but all died within 24 hours. We had not been able to build proper incubation and nursery facilities back then, but managed to do so in 2007. From the eggs laid by 15 crocodiles during July-August 2007, 141 crocodile hatchlings survived. In 2008, we got a further 241 crocodile hatchlings. Caring from egg-laying to hatchling and further nursing requires following a very strict regimen. Since the crocodiles came to the farm, we have enlisted the help of many experts namely Romulus Whittaker, Geoff McClure, Dr Paolo Martaili, Dr Karthi Martaili, and Graham Webb. We are especially indebted to Geoff who worked night and day for two months in two years and still continues to advise us on the operation and care of the farm. There were times of crisis caring for the first batches of crocodile eggs and babies, and during these times my wife, Lipa (Masiha Akther) researched and helped tremendously. She was after all a zoologist and understood the needs of these animals better than me. Also, if it were not for her mental support and encouragement during the crises, this journey would have been even more difficult. I was introduced to her a week after getting the loan sanction letter from Bangladesh Bank (March 2005), which for me was a lucky sign and we married three months later.
Four years down the line, the farm looks very different. From the bleak and bare clearing of red earth, it is now a green picture. Only 15 per cent of the entire project has been undertaken and already 55,000 cft sand, 400,000 pcs of bricks, 4,000 bags of cement and 30 tons of iron rods have been used. The crocodile farm is a 650,000 square feet canvas and so far it has been painted with almost 5,000 trees of at least 60 different species which include all the native Bangladeshi fruits as well as some hybrids. The farm has numerous visiting and residing birds including a couple of shalik (moyna) families, two hottiti (lapwing) families, bok (heron), machranga (kingfisher), ghugu (dove), kathokra (woodpecker), finge (black drongo), chorui (sparrow), chil (kite) as well as jackals and a variety of insects. For the birds the farm is an especially safe haven. The office-cum-residential cottage is an L-shaped bungalow adorned with orchids and other flowers. Throughout the year there is always at least one flower in bloom to give colour. We have offices, bedrooms, a kitchen, dining space, and toilets with running water! We still have our first makeshift toilet which hasn’t been dismantled to remind us of how we started. From the battery-operated light we have graduated to a generator as well as being connected to the national grid and with enhanced telecommunications coverage, we can now access internet easily from the farm. This cottage is the probably the only bungalow in the world from where one can sit and watch crocodiles swimming in their enclosures. Monsoon nights with thunder and lightening are a euphoric experience making it more remarkable when you can see the crocodiles enjoying the weather in lightening flashes. We currently have more than 450 crocodiles of different ages and are working towards making this number 15,000 within the next 10 years. Then the company will be able to sell about 5,000 crocodiles per year. Annually 1.5 million crocodile/alligator skins are sold per year with the market for prime crocodile skins doubling every ten years. The profit from this intervention will not only be personal but also a national achievement which can be further replicated.

A freshwater crocodile descendant of famous Kala Pahar and Dhola Pahar of Bagerhat shrine is hiding in a remote village Charhajari of Companygonj under Noakhali district. Mushtaq Ahmed in his recent visit to Basurhat came to know about the existence of the lone crocodile and found it there. It is an 8-9 feet long female fresh water crocodile, confined in a 30X20 feet pond. The pond does have a protection boundary wall, which is 5 feet high in two sides and eight feet high on the other two sides. The crocodile seemed to be overfed, thus suffering from obesity. There is very little land space for the crocodile to walk around.
The villagers informed Mushtaq that about 15-20 years back some one brought two baby crocodiles and only one is left. The remaining crocodile was named Rupa and it lays eggs every year during March.
As we know Kala Pahar and Dhola Pahar died couple of years back and our freshwater crocodiles got extinct from the natural habitat, this particular female freshwater crocodile should be taken back to Bagerhat Shrine, where it was born and left with the other crocodiles that were imported from India.

Crocodile Farming in Bangladesh and Prospects in Global Market

In recent years, different donor agencies, World Bank and our government are trying to promote investment in agro-business sector. The Industrial Policy 2004 and 2005 identified Agro-base businesses as one of the thrust sectors in Bangladesh and offered special support for the sector. Only few young entrepreneurs have taken the opportunities offered by donor agencies and government to invest in unconventional livestock farming. Mushtaq Ahmed, the founder Managing Director of Reptiles Farm Limited is one of those rare individuals. His idea of commercial crocodile farming came as a shock in year 2004. But now his unconventional vision is a reality and attracting a lot of attention.

The only commercial crocodile farm in Bangladesh, Reptiles Farm Ltd. started with 75 breeding crocodiles imported from Malaysia in October 2006. This was originally a TK. 6o million project with some adjustments on the way. The farm bought 15 acres of land in Bhaluka and utilized about 6 acres for the existing crocodile project. The farm was able to breed 141 hatchlings this year. The juveniles are to be nurtured for another two years before they can be harvested for belly skin which is of high demand in the world market. This EEF (Equity and Enterprenureship Fund) funded project is expected to break even by year 2010/2011 and continue the business without any additional investment on import of new breeding crocodiles.

The farm needed permission from a number of local and international bodies and had to convince a special committee to get the partial funding from EEF. The company is registrared with Registrar of Joint Stock of Companies as private limited company and has a vision of expanding the business in other areas like snakes, butterflies and bees in future. The farm is the only CITES registered commercial captive breeding facility in entire SAARC region. The farm also wants to expand their activities in producing crocodile feed. The company currently has a functional lab to conduct relevant research. The farm has 15 full time employees and uses local unskilled labor force based on requirement. The farm had significant impact on the local economy and development and thus get optimum co-operation from the local people.

Along with many other challenges, the farm draws some unwanted crowd that can disturb the natural existence of the crocodiles. The farm is not encouraging visitors, specially during the mating and hatching season although many people would want to treat this unconventional setup as a good tourist spot. Mr. Mushtaq was very clear about his reservation to accept visitors at this moment.

In the world market the Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) skin is the most valuable one because of its relatively small scale size and lack of osteoderms (small bones) in the belly scales. Total market size for the crocodile skin is approximately one billion dollars per annum. Reptiles Farm Ltd. has started with saltwater Crocodiles only, due to their high demand. In 1990, the world trade in quality Saltwater Crocodile skins was estimated to be about 150,000 per annum. It has increased substantially in recent years. Competition in the skin trade comes primarily from crocodiles and alligators produced in Papua New Guinea, Africa, Asia (Indonesia and Thailand) and North America. Under CITES regulations, all skins must be tagged giving details of country of origin, year of skinning and an individual number.
Crocodiles are valued primarily for their skins, being manufactured into designer products such as belts, shoes, boots, handbags, purses, wallets and briefcases. Skins are also manufactured into hatbands, wristbands, guitar straps, trophy skins, and other products. In addition, other body parts are manufactured for the tourist trade, and include heads, skulls, teeth, backscratchers, key tags, or entire taxidermically prepared animals. In addition to skins, crocodiles are farmed for their meat. Small but increasing quantities of crocodile meat are being produced for the domestic market. As the meat is produced for human consumption, like cattle and sheep, health and hygiene standards must be met. A single 1.5m crocodile gives about 6kg of meat; cuts include tail fillet, eye fillet, leg meat, body meat and jowls (jaw muscles). Crocodile meats are of high demand in Australia and some other European countries.
The journey of the Reptiles Farm Ltd. up to this point holds bitter sweet experiences for the exuberant young founder of the project. The Founder and a few devoted employees of the farm depicted their humble start and the painstaking process of learning through facing new challenges. The farm now has the expertise to assist potential new investors in this sector that can save them additional investment on foreign consultants and trainers.
